I took a few hours earlier today over in the lure factory... The weather is starting too cool and will be good for piuring lures soon. I figured I would clean my multi cavity econo series molds and load them. Polishing each cell seemed to come natural like riding a bike but prepping the inserts was hell.
Then it dawned on me that was always a job I let my workers do. It involves supergluing two eyes on a dyed plastic stem... Not brain surgery but they do have to be centered just right. Tedious work to say the least. To make it work my "jig" where I set the stems is wood and had swollen just slihtly over the last couple years of disuse. I did two pourings since I reopened but had "loaded stems" ready to go left over from before the hurricanes. I knew how they would turn out before I poured but it needs to get done to "condition " the cells. This next pour will also be a loser then they should be great for the next few months...
When I say loser, it means that there is a lot of flawed ones that come out after a pur. We lose almost one third on a cold mold (One that hasn't been worked recently). Another third wind up as seconds on therse early pours and about a third are good enough to sell.
We do sell the seconds which work fine but look a bit rough or are flawed. In fact often thats what you'll see me run on my boat. I believe the uneven finish on them creates a bit more turbulence and they seem to work better. I have a few guys that swear by them...
Any way I forgot just how time consuming and tedious this stuff is. As soon as I get some back orders filled out I'll make em available to the public and hope to be able to hire a guy or two before too long...
