    How to catch a Spider

Admin emailed me and told me that he has been getting some requests for info on our new, lightweight, composite Spider dredges. For the full skinny on these new, super easy to fish and light pulling dredges, contact our Captain Bob Melville at RNRBOB@SBCGLOBAL.NET and he will send you our SuperBar and Spider e-catalog with all of the versions, prices, ordering info, etc. in them.

Right now they are on fire up in Northern California, where a fellow by the name of Matt Goldsworthy (a member here) is tearing up the ocean king and coho salmon Spiders. I've included a picture of some of his fish. We haven't heard of anyone who is catching as many salmon as Matt. It has been a lousy salmon season so far.

Think about putting what amounts to a three dimensional, underwater spreaderbar with a hook on it that you can catch, not just tease fish with deep, just under the surface and in between and I think you'll start to realize what we have already found out - fish of all kinds, salt AND fresh water, go nuts over them!

Novel idea---I wonder if something like that would work for Striped Bass in the Chesapeake Bay?

Thanks for the good wishes, Chris. You're at the big end of the spectrum with one very neat, innovative product, while we're at the small end - well, our biggest model has 9" teasers with 12's available, but our "school" of teasers is a lot smaller, of course. There are a lot of guys out there who would like to use dredges, but the big jobs are too much for them to deal with easily. We actually have guys who fish out of kajaks using them - mostly for halibut and inshore bass, but they catch all kinds of other stuff, too.

Haven't had any east coast striper guys use them yet, but that should happen soon and I'm sure that they'll clean house. Weakfish and fluke, too.
And (ouch!) bluefish. Might be good to have some spare squids for blue bites, but what the heck, we have great squid prices and they are easy to replace. We only make them with a single armed chasebait, but yes, hooks can be added to some of the other squids. The Spider arms are the same material as our bars and are unbreakable.

It is going to be interesting to see what different fishermen do with these things. One of our guys has already discovered that you can anchor in even moderate current, drop them down on a dropper loop above a sinker and they swim around down there until something comes along and pops them. Of course, they drift and slow troll very well with no twisting too.

Down in Cabo some of our marlin buddies are really liking them because of the hook. They usually only have one deckhand and they like the fact that there is no bait and switching involved when a marlin shows up on the bar. Some chase it with a ballyhoo on a short leader connected to the Spider (same with bars too) with a small rubber band that breaks easily. This way "the switch and pitch" is automatic, the bally drops back automatically (reel in freespool with the clicker on) and the best part is, the Spider or bar remains where it was and if it has raised tuna, dorado or more marlin, the first one is almost a guaranteed hookup and they can just drop some meat or lures in the water and catch some of the others that stay on the teasers. Hard to beat that when you probably only have one crew down there to handle things right.

These are things that we have heard about them doing so far and we look forward to hearing how different fishermen use them in different areas and for different fish, both salt and fresh. Should be fun!

Here's Captain Bob with a nice bunch of good sized Pacific yellowtail (that exact same fish that sushi bar hamachi is made from - yum!) and a little bigger Spider than the ones the guys are catching the salmon on.

Fred the spider worked good yesterday for albacore it was the first rig hit in the spread. I am new to this type of fishing but I have seen Vulpinus reports and he has been doing very good with them this year for salmon and albacore.

Thanks for the reports, guys. The Spiders have been doing a number on a wide variety of fish on both coasts - albacore, yellowfin, salmon and halibut (man, that's a different cast of characters for us, at least!), and stripers, blues, fluke, tooners and of all things, some weakfish on the east coast.

This is the time of year, an unusual time for the industry, when we tend to introduce new products. The reason for that is this is the heart of the fishing season all over the country and we can really put our stuff's feet in the fire as far as how good it works is concerned. That is the final step before we start yelling about the new things and there is another new member of the family that has hatched and proven its worth....

Be on the lookout for our crossbreed between spreaderbars and daisy chains, what we call "DaisyBars". They are the best of two of the best lures of them all, the bar and the chain. For more info contact RNRBOB@SBCGLOBAL.NET and stay tuned for our Limited Time and Limited Place Offered Intro Special on the new brats in town...we've got a houserocker for those who want to try our crossbreeds!
