I use the standard [ open ] J-hook. We were 9 for 11 on BFT last week. The southern style [ closed] I do not like because when we are fishing the canyons this hook is not good for marlin hookups. If you are tournament fishing then its circle hooks all the way.
The charter boats out of NC use the southern style extensively and it works great for them. I am staying with what works for me.
The variations in rigs comes into play- who uses a rubber band or wire or wind on spring with the nose pin and the length of your leader could be 12 to 30 feet. Also the weight of the chin weigh, I like 1/2 or 3/4 oz. Good luck and catch'em up.
I use both for different applications. The closed as you call it is called "southern tuna style" . THe advantage to that shape is better hold once hooked. The disadvantage is that its tougher to get to set... Good angler will take the "guess work" out of it and open style would get the nod.
In tournies the circle is a must and its a different game getting it to set. Once set though they hold and hold.
