Home alarm systems and reputable monitoring service ?'s

I am back to tinkering with the home and I am looking for any info that may help.

I have handy helpers around and frankly we had wireless alarm systems on boats at the dealership and they were a breeze to add and set up.

I know that I can buy the equipment myself and designate the monitoring service.

There is plenty of free deals out there but seems like to much grey text to read through to be protected at home and while away.

Does the manufacturer of the equipment matter? Is there better ones then others. We had 20 wireless units that we placed around so when we locked up the building our boats and boats waiting pick up were safe.

I don't remember the devices being more than 30 bucks

I am not looking for a sale or gimmick and definitely don't want to get locked in to a 3 year contract where they tell you that you own it and there is some hidden rule of on the 109th day of contract your screwed.

I would like to have a choice in monitoring but don't know where even to start.

These days I don't leave my house or office but at sometime in the near future I will be able to resume life as normal

I don't have a whole lot of access through out the house, as there is no new construction and there is 3 stories, basement and a detached garage with a loft and a lot of entry points to protect

    Thoughts? Suggestion? Advice?

Get a male Labrador...at least they are dependable.....can't say that about any security company or electronics that I've ever had to deal with. Good Luck.

if you dont have pets and a lot of access points motion detector alarms might work for you. Cant speak for reliable security companies but you can probably set it up thru your computer to call you.

There's a system that when tripped sets off a recording of a BIG ASS dog barking..any cop will tell you..the best deterrent is a dog..alarm are good for after the fact..damage is done..but a dog..touch the door handle..or tamper with a window and it sounds like the hounds from hell ..set out a fake water bowl for effect, when i inadvertently set off an alarm at a very prestigious location,it took 10 Min. for the cops to arrive...

Nothing deters a drug addict, he fears nothing, not even dying. soooo the thought of a dog chewing his leg off, probably gives him soothing thoughts of more pills for the pain...

    Not really an option here

Not a gun owner, just my dads shot guns, but they are not here because of this clown and the thought of me just being pushed over that fine line that I am already standing on.

His new whack job family would find some why to say its my fault and be looking for the same blood I am already taking

I wish there was a point n shoot law

Never locked my doors , leave my keys in the ignition, until this crack head has destroyed everything I own, took and took till the till was dry.

I dont dare leave a lonely crumb on the table when he is near or around, he stole from everyone around so , just no trust to leave my important valuables around. Tired of having people watch the house and always making sure someone is here.

my wife, my kids, my practice.

Mary, great to see you back

We have ADT and have been happy with the service, however it is backed up by 3 mini schnausers, 2 Smith & Wessons by the bed, a Louisville slugger, and a pair of brass knuckles.

Something else that works well is Wasp spray, it can shoot further than pepper spray and hurts like heck.

For you I think a security trained Bouvier des Flanders would be a great dog, and nobody would dare come into the house.

Well whats the use of an alarm ? if he's looking to trash the place..or grab and run, then by the time the alarm goes off..the monitoring service tries to contact the house or you..then the police are called, 10-20 min have elapsed..plenty of time to do damage..BUT if there's a 150lb shepard or mastiff waiting behind the door..the asshole is done.My fathers property in L.I. was bordered by a paranoid homeowner who had 2 mastiffs, which had there vocal cords removed at birth..silent & deadly. There is no substitute for a dog....Good thing about living down south..i can legally shoot someone on my property. and have zero problems doing so.

Marine, No offense but it didnt take long for the easter bunny to go to your head. Read what you wrote...............It never fails. Talk about security and someone will always talk about how he and his gun run the neighborhood.
Good thing about living down south is no one really thinks you guys are smart enough to ever run the country so we let you talk this way.
For the record, You cant shoot anyone for being on your property. EVER! If you do, you will have a problem.
I have said this forever. I dont have a problem with anyone that carries a gun but, They should make it mandatory that you go to school the minute you buy it and want to carry it. Too many people repeat this kind of nonsense, thinks its law, and act on this form of logic.
Im not picking on you......Your just mistaken.
You cant drag him back in the back door once you shoot him, If you pull it out you better use it, or any of the other myths about carrying a gun. A gun is for killing ONLY when your life is in danger, other people are in danger, and you can not retreat.
Good thing about living up north is we can always visit the south, then leave.......and have zero problems doing it.

Mary, forget the dog. All he is going to do is eat your house. Make a rational plan about what you really expect the alarm to protect you against. Hide anything of value in a place that makes no sense,....... get ADT. I would rather lose everything I have than go to prison thinking I did the right thing shooting a guy for stealing a 6 pack of beer. Especially if its your brother.
