Smile Hi from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn

Quick question for you all, I looked at a tide chart and need to understand, if the time of high tide shows 10:35AM, does that mean the tide is just starting to come in at that time, or does it mean that it is at it's highest at that time? If the tide is at that it's highest at that time, how much earlier should I be there for the start of the movement of the water?

Sue if the tide chart says 10:35 am high tide.....that is when the tide would be at its peak....as for the best times to fish I like the first and last 2 hours of a tide swing.....I would want to be on the water around 8:30 am for a 10:35 high tide and fish through the slack tide and fish the first 2 hours of the outgoing tide......good luck and catch them up.

If you can, do a drive by a few times to get an accurate
tide time. the tables are often off by an hour or 2.
I know Indian river tide tables are off. Also.
The further in land you are the later the tides.
    Bays, canals etc.
Good luck and keep a casting rig handy in case those blues
    show up.

    Question Hi Joeksr

Thanks for the info, one more question, on the tide table I have, there are some times that are blank. I thought there is a high and a low for every day. ??

I assume the blanks your are speaking of would be in the first or last time slot of the day. If high tide is at 12:01am on Tues, it would be blank on the previous day (Monday) due to the fact that it really is the following day at 12:01. Tides change about an hour a day so it's not really a true 24 turnover. If it was a true 24 hour turnover high tide would be at the same time everyday.

Does that make any sense? It's a little hard for me to explain.

To elaborate on what giantfan said; tides don't follow the clock, they follow the lunar cycle (insert sexist comment here ). Different lattitudes have different tide cycles, but around here they run a little more than 12 hr periods which is why they make tide tables and special clocks, and they don't always fall within the standard 24 hr day.

Tide tables are usually for a single location. On the tide table you should find a list of locations with compensation factors for your specific position that tell you how much time to add or deduct for your locale.

    Forget the tide,

When I was 23 I dated a girl that was so much fun. Her name, according to me......Center City Sue. Why, she bought a condo in Philadelphia. And now you come on here and remind me! I love the name. From now on, your NY Center City Sue.

Thanks for all the info on the tides, although, I must say, it is pretty confusing to me.
