My Scanias are the 12 liter 575 horwsepower model (Yanmar has also made them into an electronic 740 hp model). The only thing electronic on mine are the governors.
We have 1700 or so hours on them now. They run very clean, other than when running at less than 1750 ( full cruise is 1900) they soot the transom a little. At idle, and trolling, they are smooth and very quiet. Running you can have a conversation without yelling. I was amazed that I could listen to my charters in the cockpit from the bridge on the way out. With the detroits, that was impossible.
We are burning a little more per hour than we did with the 485 detroits, but we are cruising alot faster. We cruise at an honest 27.5 to 28 knots (conditions permitting) at 1900. I think if you were to look at the gallons per mile we are a little better than the detroits. For example, coming from OC to Morehead, with the detroits, took 13 hours and 475 gallons. With the Scanias it took 10.5 hours and 470 gallons. I just called Dad to check, and he says with the detroits we averaged .51 mile to gallon, and the scania are .53.
So far we have not had any big problems. A water pump seal on each side has gone bad and was replaced warranty. Pump came overnight on each occasion. We have had a Diesel Engine Control Sensor go bad on each engine (the book says to check and replace if necessary at 1200 hours, and that was when it happened).
I am very happy so far. Sean from the Justified put them in as well. So far he has been pleased. I think they are a good choice as far as replacing 671's and 692's. The electronic 740 wopuld serve well to replace the 735hp 892.
Price wise, they are very comparable to the QSM11.
