Ya I know what you mean.I think I all most ran to the comp.
Looks unfortunately it may have been Cory Lidle, pitcher for the Yankees.
Sad news.
WTF was he doing in that part of town.He would have had to leave the river and take a strange angle...

It was all over the news here in the northeast yestreday and this morning. It was confirmed that it was Cory Lidle and his flight instructor. Right now it is believed that something mechanically went wrong with the plane and it went out of control hitting the 30th story in an apartment builing on the uppper east side of Manhattan....I believe it was 72nd Street. No one in the building died...unfortunately Cory Lidle and his instructor both perished.Originally Posted by GALAZIO

Please say a prayer for him, his family and the family of the flight instructor.
I had H. Stern on today and they had one of his friends on.Sounds like he wasnt a great player but he was a hell of a nice guy!
Tragic Loss
My condolences to his Family
on another note
listening to the Boston News this am there was a quote from Air National Guard on Cape Cod " we scrambled two F-16's after we saw the crash on TV???????????????????????????????
Hello !!!!!!!!!!!! Don't we have a better defense system than this
The airport towers should have emergency buttons/ Hotline to alert the Military if something even looks different
I thought when you are flying that you are being watched by some type of radar or have a signal locater that tracks your position at all times ??????

They took off out of Teterboro airport which is just across the Hudson River in NJ. They made a loop around the Statue of Liberty and headed north. When you're in that airspace corridor near Manhattan, General Aviation aircraft HAVE to stay below 800 feet so they do not conflict with Laguardia, JFK and Newark approach and departure paths.
Lidle was a new pilot so I'm pretty sure he was only VFR (Visual Flight Rules) rated. When you fly VFR, you are NOT required to file a flight plan. They probably did not have him on radar due to his low flight path.....he was most well likely below the tops of most of the skyscrapers in NYC. In addition, GA aircraft are required to have a transponder (the signal locator thing). However, unless you contact the tower at one of the major airports or air traffic control centers, then your transponder is set to "1200" which is a generic code that all GA aircraft utilize. When the code is set to 1200, the only info the transponder sends out is altitude. If he had contaced the local air traffic control, THEN he would have been given a "specific code" so that his transponder would have told air traffic control his altitude, speed, heading, etc.
Sounds kind of complicated, but........
Anyway, NYC is now reviewing whether new requirements should be put into place for the NYC airspace for GA aircraft......
