    HAND AND ARM CRAMPS

The last few times I have been bottom fishing I have gotten some sever hand and arm cramps. Even to the point where I have had to pry my hand off the rod.

I have tried drinking (more than normal) gatoraid and water but nothing seems to help.

Any of you guys fishing for big tunas ever had this happen before and what can I do you prevent it ?

You're getting old man...have to start exercising... and I don't mean arm curls with beer...or gatorade...take a look at Big Jay...tie a foundation brick on your tuna line and reel it in across the back yard.....

Sometimes having a low potassium level in your body gives cramps. I know that it is supposed to be bad luck, but seriously, just eating a bananna gives you potassium.

I know a person who was so cramped up that he couldn't get out of bed and has to be taken to the hospital. They gave him potassium and next thing you know, he was up and running. This was an extreme case, but same results.

    REEL WAKE
All the time after very long periods of time casting, cranking, etc. My hands get numb. I have had to pry my fingers off more than one reel handle after a very long fight high drag fight. Kinda like they lock up. They ache at night all the time and it gets worse the longer I relax them. Often they go completely numb. It is the worse when I am not moving them around. Been told it is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, a problem resulting from compression of a nerve in the wrist. Curious what you find out...

tie a 5 lb weight to a string attached to a 18" piece of broom handle. Hold the handle straight out from your chest, elbows locked, and roll the weight up off the ground to the handle. repeat 3 reps, letting the weight down slowly. this will increase dexterity as well, strenghthen your fingers, wrists, and forearms. do this daily, you will increase circulation to all parts of the lower arm and hand.

good luck. keep an eye on this as it could be related to something else.

Stop that extracurricular activity... You'll go blind...

I've locked up and I've hurt myself on fish enough to have figured out that I gotta switch up grip constantly. If you are locking up certain muscles over and over they are getting over worked.
I'll use my sword fight of a couple months ago. Harnessed to an 80w for two hours sucks... Especially when having to work to the helm to steer the boat too. By latting my back work for a whole then putting the load on my shoulders and then switching to arm power I was able to disperse the energy
over a wider area... Even regionally on the back I spread the fight out...
Swap the rod positions... Reel with your upper arm then lower arm then wrist then back again. Get the pressure off one specific area...
Gatorade should work some but not the end all... Vitamin E is a good additive... Quinine you can get from tonic water... All these reduce cramping... They make a lot of stuff for "restless leg syndrome" that you can get over the counter that contains some of each thing...

Having trouble reading what you said.

Last time out I tried this stuff called Electrolyte STAMINA you mix in a bottle of water and it taste really good almost like Mountain Due, I started off the day like BIG JAY looks (BAD ASS). Hell, I didn't freeze up until the last fish of the day (an AJ) about 2:30, I made every drop all day, but I knew I was done. I don't think I could fight a fish for 3 or 4 hours anymore. But it was pretty cool to know if I really did died they would (literally) have to pry my rod from my cold dead hands.

The bad thing about it was, I had $100 bucks in my pocket and when I die I don't want to leave more than $1.50.

For what it is worth I use right and left handed reels so I can switch off when it is wide open and my right arm and wrist get hammered took a little while to get use to but now I don't even notice any difference if I'm reeling right or left handed and believe me on some of the tuna bait stops I been on you need both reels!!!PEACE

I also do this! It seems to be more pronounced in the winter time as well. I have a friend that would give himself an IV he got cramps so bad. Not sure if you would go for that one

I get hand cramps from golf from time to time and they can get bad...

forget all that other crap... get yourself some of this stuff and start working it into your diet.

After years of BAD leg (hamstring, calf, foot) cramps at night while in bed, I tried everything... more water, more this, more that... didn't matter, I still was having the problems. A doc suggested potassium pills, but those carry a "risk" with them (and they were only packing 90mg of potassium)... and then I came across this stuff when I switched from another protein supplement... check out the potassium... and I have not had a cramp since.

This has one of the best "balanced" supplements of any supplemental drink there is... worth a try, and it tastes good too. drink two a day for three to four days and the cramps will be gone. promise. http://www.cytosport.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=1
