    Gps curious.

Why is it that if you use a mobile
Gps and there is a water mass, It takes you to a bridge or tunnel.
When you use a marine Gps it take you right thru the land mass?
The marine GPS knows the land mass is there, it should know you cant get there that way.

Just curious. the marine gps programmers.

You go to a bridge because you're on a road! Newer marine units will route around land, but only when you're in one form of navigation mode or another. But they're only as accurate as the charts used for the map software ...

the mobile GPS is in a mode that "snaps" to the road you are on. the bridge or tunnel are on the road so it follows that you will go right to it. older marine gps, a lot of times their charts are not accurate because of land mass changing. Also unless you are navigating a route, the waypoint you select will be as the crow flies. if there is land in the way you have to navigate around that.

newer GPS unit, I have a Garmin Oregon 550t, it has several navigation modes that help make the unit more appropriate for what you are doing at the moment. if you choose the one for roads, it will show your location on the road even if you are 20 feet off of it. if you are in the "pedestrian" mode it will show you off to the side of the road.

Which brand and model do you have?

I was kinda kiddin around with this post.
    But,

Curmudgeon, I didnt know they had anything that would even attempt to go around land. I'd like to see that.
Don't see why they couldnt program it to go around the tip of fla going down the coast
to the gulf or around an island.
    The unit knows it's there.
Inland bays wouldnt work, the channels move to much.

    Catcher,
I have a lowrance lcx-28chd on the boat.
I was just fooling around with the navionics app I downloaded to my droid and thought it was funny when it just about took me down 95 to Fl. Guess it thought I was trailerin.
