    Jim, the answer is complex.

First of all, I assume that when you say "gas logs, vent free", you mean a free standing fireplace.

What room do you what to put this in?

    Do you have natural gas?

Do you already have gas to the house?

There are reasons why many states have banned vent free.

I believe that in NC it's illegal to install them in a bed room.

You must have a (CO)? detector?

The list goes on, pm me if you want to talk and I'll give you my # or get it from Ben.

We already have gas heat and water. Looking to put them in a big brick fireplace in the den.

We already have the co detector.

Everything is in order, I'm just really looking for a product recommendation I guess.

Depending on the size of the room - watch the moisture content generated. I have seen pictures of serious moisture damage to rooms that didn't have enough air circulation to carry off the moisture. Normally it's no problem.

Not to butt in on your thread when we purchased our new house 3 years ago there were majestic logs installed by the builder they are unvented & have the worst odor to the point we cant use them. I was told it would het better with time but it has not. The gas company said we had bad gas that was causing it but that was bs they still stink any recomendations?

Jim- I can give you a few pointers.

First, get logs with a catylyst...........it is in the make up of the logs. The logs glow and burn off any excess fuel which causes fumes. I have seen many log sets that smell so bad in the house that you don't want to operate them.
The cheaper ones are like..........well, you get what you pay for.

Second- I like Vangaurd(sp) log sets. The manufacturer is DESA.

All logs must have an ODS(oxygen depletion sensor) in case it cooks all the oxygen out of the air, it shuts off the logs/pilot.

As far as codes and square foot of room vs. btu's of logs, I'm not sure of your local codes. Usually, if its in a family room or rec room, its ok.

I will try to find a link for you and if you have any more questions, just ask!!

No, not at all. Thats the kind of discussion I'm looking for.

As far as odor, I have been told to only get the ceramic fiber logs. They are going to run between $500-600 from what I can tell.

I've heard of the name, but don't know anything about them.I'll try to find out about them.

As far as the log material- ceramic fiber should be good.

I've installed Empire, Heat N Glow, and Vanguard. I also have installed COZY wall furnaces too. I'm not sure if Cozy sells logs, but my personal favorite is Vanguard.

I did a search on Vangaurds and there isn't anyone within a couple hundred miles for me to go look at a set ....... dang-it.

My next few business trips may be based on weahter or not there is a Vangaurd dealer around.
