YES, it was a forwarded email for your enjoyment. Glad some constructive thoughts came to mind for many of you. Did anyone ever consider Clinton's Administration for sparking some of today's economic problems? Unfortunately, and this is my opinion, Bush happened to get into office right after this democrat and his take from the rich and give to the poor agenda. Housing for all and sub prime loans? Gimme a break.
Go Boater,
As someone who had started up and operated businesses under both Clinton and W it is hard to even compare the climate. As local governments are starved they raise every little fee and tax. As the Federal govt becomes downright incompetent issues like immigration for professionals (we sponsor a lot of H1Bs) becomes much more difficult.
Never mind that we really haven't created any meaningful growth sectors in the US economy in the last 8 years so selling becomes difficult. Not to mention the overseas buyers seem a lot less interested in the US professional sector.
Seems to me a lot of people fit the arguement to their partisan beliefs. IMO there are a lot of great Rep governors out there doing good things, but at the federal level Reps are a disaster for business. This is reflected in the fund-raising of the Dems this election cycle.
Just curious go boater, do you own or manage a business?
Why yes, I do agree with many points and yes I find it interesting. My main point of reference is that the average worker feels entitled and like the world owe's them something. Instead of making their own place, it seems more often than not that they just resent others for their successes and overlook the back story and hard work that most enterpreneurs put forth towards building a business.
There are many folks here on this forum who are self made and work very hard for their accomplishments which all too often are overshadowed.
Go Boater and La Gringa
I agree 100% that true entepreneurs are rare, although I am not sure they are underappreciated given the opportunity we have historically provided in this country. While the media pays the most attention to the CEOs, the average top 1% wealthy person is an entrepreneur who started their own business.
I also agree that there are a lot of people out there who want to blame others for their situation, and I know personally how frustrating this can be from a business owners perspective.
All this said, I do think that many successful people ascribe too much of their success to themselves and do not consider the circumstances that got them there. I just read a book called 'Outliers' (Malcolm Gladwell, bestseller rack) which has some pretty amazing analysis on the patterns behind who is a software billionaire and who is a professional hockey player. It does make you think (in my case that I am damn lucky)....
Entrepeneurs are risk-takers first and foremost. I don't think that is something that comes from someone else. Yes, circumstances may dictate certain courses and opportunities - but ultimately, when a person strikes out on his/her own, it is that person who takes the first steps and no one else.
I am a one-woman show as I don't have any employees. That is an entire kettle of fish that I don't have to deal with. But I do run a very successful business from the Caribbean!
And yes, I agree there are patterns - I am from a family of them.![]()
