A coworker's father is shipping a boat across the big pond. The boat will arrive in the baltimore harbor in the near future on the deck of a container ship. He is responsible for removing the packaging from the marine terminal. In this case the packaging is a steel cradle that the boat sits on. Here is a clip from an email he sent.
"Any of your guys know a scrap yard that would be willing to pick up about 1000lbs of steel for less than $400. Do you guys need a really well built cradle free? It's 17' x 8' with 4 screw jacks down each side built of 6" channel. Another option would be to cut it up on the site and throw it in John's pick up."
If anybody wants it and can make arrangements to transport it, its yours free for the taking. It will be supporting a 34' Mainship trawler during the voyage. It sounds like a brute of a rack that would support quite a boat.
Give me a shout if your interested and I can put you in touch with the gentleman who is looking to dispose of it.
