If its surging at idle then its your AIC (or iac) hose, its directly on top of the motor under the black cover, look for a hole in the hose.

But, what is prob is, is a bad ignition coil, take it to a buddy that has a computer and plug it in, it will tell you misfire on cylinder 7, 9 etc (even with no check light on) Apparently these trucks are know to have an issue with water running down along the coils and causing them to go bad. There is a coil for each spark plug and the sit right on top of each plug. Should be a 3/8 socket to get it out. A new coil is 50 bucks from advanced auto and it takes 10 minutes to replace it once you know what cylinder it is. Mine went out last week on #9 on my 2000 f250 V10.

You can take it to a Ford dealer, and they can hook it up to the diagnostic machine. Even without the check engine light on, they can check what is called Mode 6 data, which records misfires, but it takes a certain amount of misfires to set the check engine light. They are still recorded in Mode 6 even without the light set.

One thing to try, put it in reverse, the E-brake on, step on the brake and rev the truck up to about 1500-2000 RPM's. If it is a misfire, it will most likely happen when revved up, because it puts the motor under a load.

PM me of ask on the thread if you need anymore help......
Agree, sounds like 1 or more bad COP's (Coil On Plug), ther is one COP on each sparkplug, so unlees you
have or get a MIL (malfunction indicator light) it will be hard to tell which cylinder it is...this is very common problem on the 4.6 and 5.4's in cars and trucks wth COP's....be very careful changing the plugs in this "Triton" engine as the factory plugs are prone to breaking off in the head, which is different then the 1999 t0 2002 4.6's & 5.4's which would "spit" the plugs outta' the heads....

I had the same problem on my old ford. It ended up being a cracked distributor cap that was allowing moisture to get in.

he said its deisel has no sparkplugs does have glowplugs but never have i heard of them going bad with so few miles. you can test them with a simple light indicator. to me sounds like fuel injection control which i belive gets the signal fom the oil pressure pump on the ford. other then that they have a cam position sensor that also tells them when to fire. which i belive had a recall for that year. check on that.
