Fisherman Don

I am new at fly fishing. Just trying to learn how at age 70. Been reading up on it, bought fly rod, reel and tie flying kit. Live in Indiana so limited on trout streams. To far from the ocean. Looking for help, suggestions, etc. Thanks to the fishing community.

Welcome Aboard Don. We have a member here called Spinner who seems to be the master of inland trout fishing. He could probably tell you more than you want to know about it. You might want to send him a pm or check out his posts in Gottaflys shallow world.

keep it simple is my advice
start out with short leaders.try to fish close, and not try to cast a mile, fish a lot downstream, learn how to tie a wooly bugger. learn how to do a simple roll cast, and practice how to cast normally, don't get caught up in the preppy movement of flyfishing for the glory of it all. sometimes the flyrod can really catch a lot of fish, most other times you will catch more fish with conventional tackle. bait ect.

if you start out with 12ft leaders down to 2lb test you are going to get yourself too frustrated
keep it simple and have some fun.

Welcome Don, glad to see you found us. Feel free to give me a shout with any questions you may have, and remember to keep things simple with your fly fishing...

From what you posted, sounds like you need to make some friends with farmers so you can fish their ponds. Also look around your home area and see if there are some ponds near you...

my thoughts

If you are just beginning, I recommend bypassing the streams and hit some local ponds. If you find a nice open pond or lake you will be able to practice the different casts and not have to worry about your footing in a stream. Also brim will hit just about anything you tie on, so you will be able to practice playing the fish. I have caught many many bass off a fly rod. Get the basics down, then try the stream. A fast moving current changes everything.
