    FINS

Does anyone know what happens to the dorsal fin of a bill fish after it has been torn?

I was told by a reliable source that once torn, they do not re-attach and the fish swims like we would walk if we were to lose a toe or two. Is there any truth to this.

    Any biologists out there?

Look at some of the threads "real recently" !
Half a fish still alive!!! Tail gone!!!!, Makes you wonder if you cut off one peck fin do they swim in circles for a while!
Adapt or die, could be worse you could be eaten by a food bank.
Make you feel better no! good get out and fish.

Great question Knot, I'm curious too. This spring in CR we had a fish come to the boat with a damaged sail and I wondered the same thing.

Hopefully someone out there has the answer for us.

i am not an expert by any means but I have seen numerous sails in CR and Guatamala that were torn and it sure didn't affect the fight they put on. I think a lot of time the sail is down to give the fish greater speed and the sail is used more for sudden turns and leaps as well as intimidation to a larger fish. just my .02

Exactly right. It's used for turning suddenly. Acts like a rudder of sorts. Also used to "show off" in ways of that of a turkey to a hen.
