I would recommend a trip into the Pamlico with Extreme Measures to chase Red Drum. Easy fishing, lots of bites and beautiful scenery.

take him down to venice la. hook up with strike zone or one of those guys and tell him you wanna go to 26-35-57N, 091-00-00 W for an overnighter... get there round 4 in the afternoon and by 6pm, youll want to go home. i promise
150 miles from venice, maybe more... havent looked lately.
but id recommend anywhere from Mid Nite lump out to any of the platforms and rigs in the Gulf of Mexico rite now... Some big mean yellowfin out here. And forget the chunking for them... Cast top water around the sides of a rig or drill-ship and you'll know what I mean.
my dad is beggin me to get him out here to the rig some how just to check it out. so if i strap him to a tuna and let him look at the ship at the same time i think ive done my part...

I think the keys would be cool. Like Pounder said - offshore/reefs one day, tarpon at night and then the back country. I'm hard core offshore - but that back country is a lot of fun. Plus, it's a chance to get out of the north for a while.
No matter what, he's going to have a ball!
Ive personally never fished around a drill ship of rig, always wanted to. I got in to chasing scallop boats then casting in to the slick for giants up here.
Now there is a touchy subject, some people are all about it. Riding along side then pitch your bait it to the slick...i personally love it. But some guys get really offended when you say you enjoy it. I am from New jersey, and have caught a lot of fish all over but i have definitely fallen in to the catagory of a Tuna Junkie.
What do you think...Is it cheating? Or is fishing fishing.
You have the right idea!!! Whatever you do will be fun! Don't give yourself an ulcer trying to plan the perfect trip. The perfect trip will be the one that you plan. The time you spend together will be the highlight, only punctuated by the thrill of catching some fish !!!!! It seems to me the only downer about fishing is being at the mercy of the weather Gods. Look for a time and a place where you can bank on some calm seas, a nice day, and a nice ride out to the fishing spots and back to the dock. Upper East coast seems to need a whole lot more weather luck than say Ft Lauderdale or the Keys. My Opinion - Florida, a nice weekend trip, and 2 days to pick from so you get the best ride !!!!! P.S. Pretty Lucky Dad !!! 7 Years after losing my Father, many of my best memories are of boating and time spent by the water with my family !!! Priceless.

take him to the washington inn, have a nice dinner, tell him you love him, get dessert, let him go fishing on his own. it's never like when you were young. he probably doesn't even want to kill a fish anymore. as we get older.......it happen's.
A summer flight to the Southwest Rockies and a weekend trip into the mountains for a stream full of trout. He'd never expect it and he'd never forget it.
