Once deployed a signal is sent to the coast guard either through radio signal or satallite or both.There are manual and automatic deployed models.Go to west marines site in the gps area of the catalog is a very good explanation of how it works.

I just talked to Erik at Electronic Marine Concepts (SFC sponsor) yesterday about some other electronics.

They sell a variety of EPIRB's, call them, I am sure they can answer all the questions you might have.

If you go offshore definitely get an EPIRB. We have a regular 406 in the ditchbag, and a "GPIRB" mounted on the hardtop.
