As you know, it has been a long road for me to get out on the water in the kayak. But, as you also know, I am not the type to let being blind be an excuse. So, here's an update on my progress...
I met up with a fellow that lives down the street that recently lost his wife and is looking for things to do. He's seen the yaks in the driveway, and saw me out cleaning the boats one day after my wife and I hit the water on one of our "training cruises". He stopped and we chatted. I found out that he loved to fish, had only experience fishing the fly in rivers, but wanted to learn to fish the salt and had time on his hands. I told him that I was willing to show him what I knew about fishing the brine in a kayak, that we would have to start off with conventional tackle because I'm not ready to attempt fly casting in a tandam. He put the time in putting a hitch and wiring on his car to haul the yak, and we have been learning for a few weeks now. He has been learning to handle the yak, the electronics, and having a blind nut aas a fishing partner.
I found out about a local kayak fishing club holding a tourney at the end of the month, so we are now entered in it. The competetion is a fund raiser for the organization "Healing Waters", a group that works with disabled war vetrans. Some fantastic prizes, a nice gathering offered at the end... Sounds like fun. (Hey, they have a yak up for grabs in each of the targeted species divisions. Redfish, Trout, Flounder and Striper. Plus I think there will be one for biggest over all fsh and one in hte raffle. Not bad!) So far my rial runs have not netted me anything that would win, heck I haven't been able to catch anything the law would let me take home, but I'm happy to say I'm getting on the water.
So there you have it, the reason I haven't been around too much. Been trying to get my butt on the water, and ppass along the joys of fishing the salt with an elderly gentleman that has a hole in his life to fill. Wish us luck in hte tourne. I'll let you know how we do. (Of course the real winners will be the chaity. Our guys that got disabled for our freedom deserve a great deal.)
