    Electrical Question

I'm in the process of building out my boat..I'm using a 12/24 (3) wire trolling motor..My batteries are joined as shown..My question --- Can I safely connect my fish finder to either battery ? 24 volts would cook it..Are the Batteries still putting out just 12 volts and the trolling motor combines the currents internally ??

Thanks for any help offered. Mike

Yes, you can wire your locator to a single battery safely.

Here ya go---- In your diagram, the red +leg is 24v the Blue +leg is 12v. I n the identical diagram below p1 is 12v and p2 is 24v
Use a meter to double check---

make sure you put a 30 amp fuse between the battery and the trolling motor .

If you are charging the batteries combined at 24v either from a dockside charger or from the motor then this is a bad idea as you will kill the "other" battery over time. What happens is the fishfinder drains the one battery more then the other, then charger kicks in charging both which in turn shortens the life of the "other" one being over charged. Check with the back of the fishfinder as most marine equipment will run on both 12v and 24v. If each battery has independent 12v charging then go for it.

I just got back to this post..I did put in a "breaker" when I wired it.

I also installed an onboard charger , so each battery gets charged independently.

Good info tho guys , thanks again.
