THE QUIKSILVER IN MEMORY EDDIE OF AIKAU, FUELED BY MONSTER ENERGY, IS A GO!
TUESDAY, December 8, 2009 - 7:30AM

The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, fueled by Monster Energy, has officially been called "ON" by Contest Director George Downing. The ASP specialty sanctioned event will kick off at 8am. Wave face heights are in the 25-35-foot range.

The event will broadcast live at Quiksilver.com/Eddie.

In Hawaii, the event will be broadcast live throughout the day on Oceanic channel 250 and HD1250, courtesy of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. News feeds of event highlights will be produced today, along with high-resolution images.

In addition to the major placings, Monster Energy will be presenting the Monster Drop Specialty Award for the surfer who makes the most critical drop and rides out of it during the event. The judges will determine the winner on the day of the competition and will present the chosen surfer with a unique Monster Drop Specialty Award Trophy.

Held in honor of the legendary Hawaiian waterman, Eddie Aikau, The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, fueled by Monster Energy, gathers the most skillful and dynamic big-wave surfers from around the globe. It is the world's longest running and most prestigious big-wave invitational and is the only one sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), the governing body of professional surfing.

Because The Eddie requires waves at least 20 feet in size during the annual one-month holding period, The Eddie had only run seven times in its 24-year history.

The North Shore is a zoo when there is a competition going on. When we were there a few years back, We showed up during the finals of Pipeline Masters... Had to walk 2 - 3 miles to get to the beach... And it was a bad day by Pipeline standards...

read something yesterday that on Monday while waiting for the Eddie Aikau to go off Tom Carroll got hammered by one of those monster ... Think they said he suffered a separated/dislocated ankle, said he's done for awhile.
They were talking 30-40 foot !!!
Scary when you think of how that could have ended up

Yeah, it has to be 40' for them to hold the tourney. I have no doubt it was all of that.

greg long big wave hellman from so-cal win's the eddie with a perfect score of 100 on his last wave of his last heat to overtake kelly slater to win his first eddie. greg used all 4 wave's in the final heat including the perfect 100 point wave which was by far the largest wave of the day to take down slater!!!!!!!!!
