    Eastern Caribbean Cruise Questions

    Hello All,

The end of September my Wife and I will be on a cruise for her 30th Birthday. I was looking for any info for fishing while I am down there.

    I will be at:

Half Moon Cay (Carnival’s Private Island) 9:00-4:00

    St. Thomas 8:00-6:00

    San Juan, P.R. 7:00-3:30

    Grand Turk 11:00-5:30

Does anyone, or anyone know anyone that runs charters at these destinations? The Cruise line offers Fishing at half Moon Cay and Grand Turk but I have done that before… Just throwing this out there to see if anyone knows anything…

    Thanks!
    Shane

The cruise ship fishing trips tend to be more like boat rides. I have done a few of them. They are overpriced usually. I don't think any commercial charter boats can get into half moon. You are stuck with Carnivals trip there.
I did Princess in Grand Turk. Carnival and Princess probably use the same company as Carnival owns Princess. See my report. Your short visit there makes it hard to get arrangements. Also the dock there is open to the sea so it ocassionally gets missed due to weather.

There are a lot of charter boats in St Thomas but you should take your wife jewelry shopping.

Do keep in the back of your mind that September is in the hurricane season window and any trips you plan, it may be advisable that you have trip insurance. My brother did not have any trip insurance a couple of years ago during the same time period and lost a significant amount of money, in "non refundable deposits".

I always take trip insurance. You never know what is going to happen. It is rare to cancel a cruise due to waether although they may cancel or change ports because of it.
Trip insurance (we use Princess gold) pays for more than cancelation. It also pays for medical expenses out of the country that you insurance won't cover- including medivac from the ship. Ours also paid for all our expenses leaving the ship and returning home from Lisbon when my father in law was dying. It is worthwhile. We have used it 2 or 3 times in 10 years

I know what you mean by the boat rides... I did a ishing trip in Mazatlan mexico. Now I did catch a big striped marlin but the boat had alot to be desired. it was a fiberglass boat but the deck was spongy when you walked in it. The captain was drinking... other than catching a fish of a lifetime the trip was not good...

We have been to St. Thomas before.

I understand this. This will be our 4th cruise since 2005. 2 out of the previous 3 have been September-October. Mayeb we have been lucky but we never hit any real bad weather.

We do get crusie insurance everytime we go. Not taking the chance.

We have been on 1 Carnival and 2 Princess Cruises up until now. Carnival seems to be more of a party atmosphere and Princess is more layed back.

I took a boat ride in Matzalan once. We had fun but the boat was a piece of shit. No GPs, no depth finder- only a handheld radio.
They went straight out for 1 hour then came back the same way. No fishing structure or anything like that. They also kept whacking something on the engine with a wrench to keep it running.

we've had 23 Princess cruises and a few on other lines. we have always liked Princess best.

If you go again PM me and I will send you a link to the best prices we have found
