    DRUGS & CAPTAINS & MATES...THE TEST

ARE YOU A FREELANCER LIKE MYSELF? DO YOU GET HIRED SOMETIMES RIGHT ON THE SPOT ...MAYBE LATE ONE EVENING TO GO WORK PARTTIME ON A CHARTER BOAT THE NEXT DAY ? THE MARITIME CONSORTIUM SAYS I MIUST BE ENROLLED ON THAT BOATS DRUG PROGRAM....

    NOW READ THIS LINK: http://www.drugfreevessel.com/public...al_op_info.htm

THIS MEANS THAT A MATE ON ONE CHARTER BOAT CANNOT FO FILL-IN FOR ANOTHER MATE ON YET A DIFFERENT BOAT....

THIS MEANS A GUY FREELANCING AS MYSELF CANNOT HAVE HIS OR HER INDIVIDUAL DRUG CARD....NOW IF THIS AIN'T ABOUT A STUPID RULE HERE

HERE I AM VOLUNTEERING TO TAKE A FRIGGING DRUG TEST...I HAVE NEVER DONE DRUGS IN MY LIFE ! AND I AM PREPARED TO PAY FOR THIS DRUG CARD OUT OF MY OWN FRIGGING POCKET AND THE MARINTIME CONSORTIUM TELLS ME I MUST BE UNDER A VESSELS BLANKET DRUG PROGRAM

THIS MEANS I CANNOT BE HIRED ONE EVENING AND BE LEGAL??? AM I CORRECT HERE?

WHY CANNOT AN INDIVIDUAL CARRY HIS OWN DRUG CARD?

Box , the way I understand it is that a mate is a independent contractor....not working for the company. I know this has come up here in the past....

I just renewed my card through the American Professional Capt Assoc.

    http://www.apcadrugtesting.com/

I was told as either a capt/mate or crew member I needed to provide the Reg #, boat name and company name for any boat I work on. If its one or ten boats they need that info and that they were getting tighter on it. So, pretty unlikely that anyone does that, but thats the rule I was told.

Check with Barry the inspector down there Marty, but what I was told on the dock up here by the Inspector, get the card and have it on your person, yes it is vessel specific, but if you are on a different boat on a strictly freelance basis they will let you slide. BUT the guy told me if he sees me for more than a day or 2 here and there on the boat I am NOT in compliance.

    And yes it does suck.

Either way you need the card, and it is better to have it than not to have it.

Well that screws me for any fill ins this season. I do have a very strict zero tolerance policy here at my job. But that will not help me for fill ins. Guess I better look into this too.

    what a crock of BS

the way I see it is if your are enrolled in the program, that puts you in compliance with the CG as long as you work as a independent contractor ie: no taxes taking out and receive a 1099 for your work. if this is the case then you are self employed.... this means you are responsible for the testing & maintaining your status in the program not some business you are contracting with. shit.. for that matter you could also form Wahoonbox Inc. and I know your "company" would be in charge of their own testing program.

This can't be forced by the coast guard or it would put hundreds of guides, freelance captains, mates, deckhands etc. out of work. Owning or working for someone else on a charter boat has never been a requirement for getting your ticket so I really don't understand how they will get by with this.

Capt. Jon Tennant I am reading this today. The self employed sound judgemental. On the other end come insurance ie... workman comp, etc the Contractor is required by law to address......Two more cups of thick black coffee and will have a even view on this.

But for now I see the owner of the vessel doing all the paper work, shelling out the funds required. Owner/employer is allowed ? (3) employees/contractors???? (nothing specific stating contractors are included to the publication) and can switch between an unlimited list. But how often is his paper work requiring an update or can a phone call confirm the switch between employee(or contractor) for that day. Is there a grace period say.....they close 4:00 pm Friday...open 9:00 am Monday ...I see a ton of unanswered questions, borrowing the faq list on the linked site above. And the web site is pretty specific in what I read. A 20 spot says........you ask some of the questions generated on the post......to the company issuing the testing/cards........and you will get half ass-ed answers not warranted in their policy (as of their publication).......Heck for that matter Marty.....start your own business called "rent a mate". It is early in the day You do the testing for your company. Have a list of subcontractors on speed dial......charge a fee.....for the required paper work.....bingo bongo....all the freelance NC Mates are covered under your group plan

one more big cup to go
