Do custom boats really raise more fish?
Do custom boats really raise more fish?
WOW - Great question.
I have a few addon questions...
Do customs catch more fish because they have been built/fished by really good captains?
Would those same captains do as well on a non custom?
Does wood transmit a better hum???
me thinks ( I always wanted to write that), that it makes no difference the boat, you put someone who fishes every day on any rig they will produce, in there home port. vs someone who fishes say weekends. I will say some baots do raise more fish, like the old Harkers Island, Brain Porter used to run, that boat had tunas swim up the pipes. Then The I caught her, a ocean yacht, in OC had a baby WM actually swim up his pipes during the open one year.
My old Hatteras , Marlin loved her. My new rig, Marlins love her , both the blue and the white and so do tunas, when they are around.
The boat helps but so does the guy driving and the man in the pit. It takes Cohesiveness to put Da Meat in da BOX.

fish don't care at all what kind of boat you're fishing from...much to the chagrin of many multi-million $$$ yacht owners who get outfished by little outboards all the time...
I'd rather have a great doctor with a dull knife, than a vet with a scalpel...

I do think wood diesel boats are better at raising fish better, but who wants to care for the darn things. Acoustics translate into vibrations. If vibrations & acoustics don't count for anything then I suppose a lateral line on a fish is worthless. The Merritts, Whiticars, Rybovichs, Scarborough, Sportmans, etc. all have their reputations for a reason.
I wouldn't go as far as saying one "boat" outfishes another, but I have been on some boats with single engines that seem to raise more fish. I dont know what it is, maybe the hum or something? Know some captn's that are adament about a certain RPM and will not stray from it. And yes they catch alot of fish! Ask some of those boys out of Oregon Inlet what they think about single engine boats!
I even know of one fellow who refused to change a bearing that was squeeking because he swore that it called fish to his boat. I know that he was in the money every tournament he entered. So there may have been some truth to that.
Then again wood may have some acoustical advantages too. I guess it adds to the allure of Big Game fishing doesn't it?
i think it comes down to this, its a lot more fun to go on a date in a bentley or a rolls royce. like wise with boats. i would love to fish a merritt, a whiticar or rybovich. do i think i would outfish a similar glass boat? no. but i feels good, and looks good. even better.
Would a hull sitting in the water with no engine in her still raise fish? And if so, I guess a plastic raft would raise about as many as the next hull.![]()
