bvett, I think we can all argue till the cows come home and everyones going to have their own opinion on the subject. I know boys that grew up fishing the fiberglass boats and will attest to their ability to raise fish, as well as my own experiences with wooden boats.

Just as some like the Yamahas, others like the Mercury's, I guess its the spice of life!

    Talking Got Wood?

It's all about good harmonics and wood boats have it. In a level playin' field as Bvette said, The wood boat will attract more fish because of the sound produced by the motors and spinning of the shaft through the wood. Just like someone pointed out earlier, I would rather listen to a quality wooden guitar than a plastic one!

I have had good luck in both. One fiberglass boat I owned raised billfish real good, many close to the boat. I fished a 48 Viking I could not get the fish close to the boat, I set everything back further and started catching again. I fished the customs and everything seemed to be close and it seemed to be more often. The white water behind the boat was less on the custom boats. Maybe making it easier for the fish to see the baits. I would like to hear more coments. Like the thread said above all the boats in Oregon Inlet are custom wood are they wood for a reason. Those guys can buy glass if they want. But they need to catch fish every day. Comes back to being consistent.

Ok the Deep view... Most any boat will have its spots and speeds that raise fish. Some its easier to find than others. Yes vibrations etc do play a huge role in raising. Thats where a good captain will come in, find those and work it. In my life I have been on some boats that raised more fish than others and can find no real rhyme or reason.
Among the hot ones was only one "custom" a 43' Merrit, Snee Kee Peet. There was an old trawler converted into a house boat by the late Bill france Sr., Littlke Kay that had natural 6-71 power and raised the hell out of stuff. One Hatteras 60, Gasparilla, was another hot dog... Reel Delight was a gas powered Albemarle that was outstanding at raising fish, better by far than even mine...
Each machine had a different sound but they were all over the top good at drawing fish. I've had some duds too. Another 60 Hat would only catch fish if we were live baiting. A 48 Ocean was the same way. I had a mako 25 that couldn't catch a cold. I swear that it actually spooked fish... Some boats raise on one side only. Emotional Rescue was like that. All left side. I think I caught only two fish on the right...

    Speaking of Oregon Inlet

I have to wonder if economics has anything to do with the single screw charter boats out of OI fishing Center ? Probably nothing, I'm sure these boys are more concerned about that clean wash and what the charter is going to catch than the cost of running the boat out there and back!!

My thoughts here some boats seem to raise fish better than others some have more flat line bites than others that being said i've fished vikings, post, ocean yachts, hatteras, bertram and egg harbor on the production side caught fish on all some better than others some all the bites were way back some damn near up the tail pipe hell one of my best days was on a 42 bertram with 2 bent wheels after we hit a submerged 4x4. On the custom side i've fished andy mortenson, rybos, ricky gilliken(east bay), jarrett bay, paul mann, scarborough and paul spencer. These boats to had a personality of there own when it came to raising fish especially where in the spread just as the production boats did. I can tell you that some boats sound better to me than others some have that come hither rumble but that being said i ain't no fish so not sure how it sounds to them. Most custom boats seem to have better sounding harmonics than production boats do. Just go below and listen to the chine ahead of the engine room and you will hear the engine harmonics best hear. I do believe that cutless bearings can make or break your day atleast in my opinion and probably Adrian Hollers (Sea Striker) to. I like to go below deck and listen to my shafts and running gear under the stern from time to time ust to see if i have any tell tail squells going on. All that being said yes i think some boats raise fish better than others but a good captain and crew will make all the difference more so than the boat. Just thought of a couple of good examples here John Bayliss and Mike Merritt both have run production and custom and caught equal amounts of fish hell Bayliss won Pirates Cove one year on a 70 Hatteras enclosed bridge and did very well on several of Bluewater vikings 55 demos.

And Bayliss is building "WOOD" why did he elect to built a wood boat? Must have had something to do with personal expierence. I fished a 55 Viking as well I think its a nice boat I probably would rather take care of the Viking before trying to take care of the Custom boat and needing to repaint every 5 or six years. That lure of maybe raising more fish makes me think of buying a custom boat.

He still caught 20 whites on a hatteras just proves you can be good on either if you are good. And for the record i to think a production boat is alot less upkeep than a custom but i'd still take one. Man it's all in what you want if you have not already you may want to charter a few boats that you like the builders to get a good feel.

I know many guys that can catch fish on glass boats. I myself have won several tournaments on a glass boat. I was just wondering if on average come the end of the season will the wood boat end up with more releases than the glass boat. If it does not matter. Does it come down to the ride? That most are after.
