we will be leaving nj around 3 thursday morning heading for morehead city. we will be in town looking at some property, and since we were in town we figured we would try and get offshore which came to be when i got in touch with john and so we will be fishing on the run off on friday. i actually was stationed in atlantic beach for a couple of years but cant remember the best way down. i know i can take 70 off 95 but i think there are a lot shorter ways. thanks for the help.

It's US 17, not 117. US264 takes you through Greenville to Washington, where you can pick up US 17. Or you can take NC 43 south out of Greenville and pick up 17 a little further south at Vanceboro. Anyway, that stretch of 17 is two-lane most of the way.

I know that stretch of road well. Grew up in Newport, and spent the last 27 years (20 in the Navy) in Norfolk. Made that run home often through the years.

if you decide to run down 95 to 70, I would get off at the Selma exit (used to be US 70A). It will cut some time (and distance) off your trip as well.

Sorry, I am not familiar with US 264, and haven't driven NC 43 since I went to ECU in 1978.

The new 117 bypass is located about 2 miles west of the old 117. Its 4 lane, 70 mph. Defenitely not a back road, but it does go down through the country. As I told Glenn very pleasant and NO CLAYTON!

From Greensboro this weekend I am going to try 40 to Durham, 70 to 540. 540 around Raleigh to 64. 64 to 264. 264 to 117 and onto 70.

My normal route 421 to 64, around Raleigh to 40/70, is getting terrible now that summer is here. Plus Clayton really takes the wind out of your sails.
