I am a research chemist at a major University. I went to a renewable energy conference in Ventura, CA in January and I saw a glimpse into all the breakthrough research that is going on all over the world. Needless to say, it was very exciting to see what types of technology chemists are working on for our future energy independence. However, having said that, I hate to break it to Nancy Pelosi, but we are decades away from implementing any such renewable energy.
She is literally flapping her gums in Washington while knowing nothing about the science of energy harvest nor the progress of the field. She thinks that we need to focus our efforts to new sources of energy and not drill for our own oil. In my opinion, this attitude is the single-most damaging force on our economy. In the coming decades, while we are working towards energy independence, we need to use the energy we have available in order to sustain the economy and the livelihoods of our entire populace. The ability to do this is being stifled by one idiot, the biggest idiot, in all of Washington.
Remember all this ado about energy regulations some years back. The republicans filibustered that bill to prevent the up-or-down vote because they thought it would be a detriment to the economy. Nancy Pelosi, in all of her hysterical rage, said that when she is speaker she would make sure that every bill that comes to the floor gets its fair shot at the up-or-down democratic process. Well, she has proven to be a hypocritical liar on that front. Now she sits on her chair shaking her head "NO" because she knows that if oil drilling comes to the floor, it will pass. And that is totally against what SHE believes. In fact, remember she says "I'm trying to save the planet; I'm trying to save the planet," she says impatiently when questioned. "I will not have this debate trivialized by their excuse for their failed policy. I respect the office that I hold," she says. "And when you win the election, you win the majority, and what is the power of the speaker? To set the agenda, the power of recognition, and I am not giving the gavel away to anyone."
Have you ever heard such a raving lunatic?
Next, all this BS about "drilling not making an impact on the price of gas." This is just nonsense. One word: speculators. When Bush got in front of the camera and declared an end to the executive ban on offshore drilling, the price of oil fell $8 DURING HIS SPEECH! It's fallen a total of $25 since then. When we declare to the world that we aren't willing to be held hostage for our gasoline, they will start playing fair marketplace economics again. The fact that it may take a decade to get the oil out of the newly drilled areas is a moot point.
My boss recently applied for a grant for research into a method of energy harvest from water oxidation. The bottomline: we are working on renewable energy. It will come, we just have to be patient. In the meantime, something has got to get us through the next couple decades and I'm not willing to sacrifice the entire economy for a silly fantasy perpetuated by Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi.
