I have been experimenting with Malin's Boa titanium single strand crimped to Spro Power swivels to create a more stealthy wire leader for trolling. The general opinion is that this leader does not crimp well and that it is hard to get a "bite" on the wire with sleeves. My unscientific research has revealed that titanium single strand does crimp very well if done properly. I do not have any way to determine the pressure used to create a failure, but I have not been able to cause a failure in the titanium connections before a failure in the mainline of comparable strength of a well crimped leader. I have caused failure in crimps where the leader is crossed in the sleeve or crimped too lightly or heavily.
I use AFW size 0 sleeves for 30#, size 1 for 40# and size 2 for 50# and crimp twice on each sleeve with a "Micro Crimper". These leaders really do impart more action on my King / Hoo rigs and have held up much better on multiple fish vs single strand wire with a haywire twist. I beleive the stretch has saved a few leaders that were hit very hard.
I have started rigging with titanium leaving about 6" leader in front of my trolled lures to a power swivel and have not had a failure yet although they have not been seriousely stressed yet.
I would like to hear from those who have experimented with titanium single strand and their observations as well as those who handle leaders for toothies differantly.
Thanks,
