Steve- my hard drive crashed in my old laptop and when I looked for a new one, I had the same question. I ended up with AMD Turion64 and 120gb hard drive and have had good luck the past 2 or 3 months with it I use it for everything- Heat calculations, games, movie studio/video editing and all my internet surfing too!![]()
I say wait a few months if possible, I hear there is new technology coming out from Intel that will be Smokin...
I have both AMD and Intel and both work well for me. I have recently purchased a couple of EMachines at great deals from Best Buy and they work great... Be sure to upgrade the memory...
Happy Hunting...
John after talking to you Friday night at the MA500 weigh-ins and the split bill video, It doesn't suprise me that they don't last long with you.![]()

Barry, I think that I was looking at the same laptop that you have. I was wondering about the AMD in it. Thanks for the info.
Fishin fool, Is there anywhere i can read up on this new stuff coming out??
I design computers for RAID systems. Here's what I can offer based on the limited info. The only ding on AMD is that they offer some low cost models without parity protection on the "front side" bus. These computer busses are short and very robust, but once in a while, there's a transmission error between the memory subsystem/controller into the CPU(s). Usually, when that happens...crash. On the flip side, with parity protection, when an error occurs it results in a similar thing...crash. BUT, it's what we call a "fast fail". Nothing (data) is not compromised. AMD offers both, it's simply a matter of cost.
If your running critical applications such as your business, make sure the AMD solution meets your needs. Like I said, they offer multiple chips. Intel designs are mostly covered for these kinds of transient errors.
Eyeing the big picture, make sure it will do what you want and get as much s/w included as you can. These are big ticket items. Cameras, CD, or better yet, DVD writers for backup, storage and lots of it (Hitachi makes a decent disk drive - avoid Maxtor) and memory. Good luck.
Steve, I ended up with HP Pavillion dv5139 Notebook from circuit city.Originally Posted by Stripersniper

Barry, I was looking at that exact one tonight at Circuit city. It sounded real familiar when you posted it. Looks like a sweet laptop. It just gets confusing with so many choices out there.
