Commercial boats losing permits for good?

A friend of mine stopped by the house the other day and were chatting the who is doing what now a days.

A lot of friends growning up worked on or ran the commercial boats, some have moved on and have thier own now. He was saying that a lot of the commercial boats were losing thier permits due to not submitting catch reports and they would never be issued a permit again.

    Any truth to this?

I don't mean all commercial boats just the ones that are not reporting thier catch and bi-catch reports as required by the state or what ever you want to call it! The people reporting thier catches will not be effected

Wheew what a rumor that one would be!

I do recall getting a notice from the NMFS that no permits would be renewed if people were not up to date on their log bogs, that goes for king macks as well. Even if you don't fish one month, you have always been required to send in your monthly report as not fishing. I guess they are just finally enforcing the rules that have always been in place.

That's what I thought I didn't get a notice but I did remember hearing it.

I don't know jack about commercial fishing! I guess it kind of sucks, you get the myth that they don't bother you so why bother. Its also a shame that they were not enforcing it in the 1st place. I know of some of the boys here have been scalloping for a very long time and all a sudden you get a non-renewal letter it sucks but in the same sense they should be playing by the rules!

Unless they had actually issued you a log book, then you probably wouldn't get the notice. I sold all my licenses, so when the notice came I really didn't pay much attention. I guess my name was lingering on their records.

FVTRs (fishing vessel trip reports) must be filed. Ditto for Did Not Fish reports for a given month. NMFS can decide not to renew permits for failing to do so. I was late once and got a nasty letter. Haven't pushed it since...

    the way it goes.

That is what I was told.. I had a totally re-built scotty craft made into a neat commercial boat, worked my ass off to get my federal kingfish permit rs spl and everything was great. got up out of bed every morning at 3am went and threw the net on pilchards and loaded the livewell. I caght the hell outta kingfish by rod and reel and made good $. then I lost my boat due to a kid taking my truck, trailer, and boat out in a wreck on hwy 95 on a sunday morning. had close to 800 lbs of shrimp that morning after pushing nets all night. since the boat is the piece that has the license it was voided. just the way that this government works. Now I take charters, rebuild boats and follow the rules that charter guys are made to follow. we still are the only country that has limits. I will never understand why in a case like that that you cannot get another permit without buying someones boat with a permit... I did my trip tickets everyday and worked my ass off. I do remember sitting on my dock wondering what the hell am I gonna do... worked out ok so far but miss that 2 hour bite in the morning where you could catch 50 fish and be home by 11 am. Still fish the same way but with 2 fish per person the bites over fast.

Quest your permits should still be good if you had a RS that is good for 3 years from the first trip ticket and you needed 5K first of all to get your RS. If your permits are in your boat name you would have a VSPL not a SPL. If you had a SPL it would be in your name a VSPL would be in a company or LLC. For them to take your permits your log is not up to date or you did not renew your permits by the date on the permits when they expire or you buy fish from someone with out a SPL. I have many permits including Shark, Tuna, Swordfish,Snaper/Grouper, Kingfish, etc. and I just keep track of all the catch. Just renew your permits on time and there are no issues. The people in St Petersberg Fl. NOAA are great people and very helpful give them a call with your permit #'s and they will tell you about switching them to a different boat or name or the king fish can be sold (as long as it didn't expire) I think someone told your the wrong info Snaper/Grouper is the only permit that there is an issue, if you have it in your name and you sell it the buyer needs 2 personal permits to get one back the Fed keeps one. If you have it in a company you can sell that company with the permit. If you need any phone #'s let me know.
