College Spring Break

All this Spring break talk about where to go---- Costa Rica, Cancun, Isla, St. Thomas. Was scanning old photos this weekend and came across a couple from my Freshman Spring break.
The rich kids went to Myrtle Beach. The really rich brats got to make a road trip to Daytona. Even heard rumors (unconfirmed) back then that some from the Fu Fu schools (UVA, Duke, WF) even could afford to go to Ft. Lauderdale.
Well, we went to Isla for our Spring break in '77----- Isla de Hatteras.
Only has enough gas money to take one vehicle so four us us crammed into a Yota FJ-40 for a week of sun and fun. It blew 50 kts for 3 days, then rained another 4.
Hotel reservations?--- resturants?--- what charter boat?--- Dinner was dogfish on the campfire caught in the surf.

Pretty cool post there Glenn.

It was a different time back then... but in High School, we road tripped it to Panama City Beach once we turned 16. College years, Ft Liquordale was the spot, but I was usually tied up in a golf tourney somewhere wearing orange & navy blue polo's and saddle shoes. (but I did have a fishing rod in my bag and won more money gambling with other guys fishing the ponds on golf courses in the evening than on the track during the day).

I do remember though in PCB one year... we had spent all our money wining & dining the ladies and had three more days PLUS we had to get home... so being scholastic giants, we snuck into a bar with our fake ID's where I won an arm wrestling contest for $50. That gave us enough money to rent a snorkling setup along with a hawaiian sling spear and I dove the jetties for sheepshead & redfish. Got enough for food for three days and had enough money for beer for three days (budgeting is important). When it came time to drive home, out came the "emergency gas card" which mom & dad gave me... no cell phones, pagers, email... nothing. And we turned out OK.

Damn - that brings back memories - I spent a very cold spring break in Duck - we had to break onto the pier to fish - not much action, but snow in March on the Outer Banks is way cool...
