Coast Guard honors boy who saved his grandfather
Posted on November 23, 2010
A Coast Guard official and congressman on Monday presented a 9-year-old boy from Jonesport, Maine, with the Coast Guard Certificate of Valor. Matthew Drisko was recognized for heroic actions while helping to rescue his grandfather May 26, 2009, during a fishing trip.
The man became tangled in a line and fell overboard into 44-degree water. After attempting several times to lift his grandfather back onto the boat, Drisko, the only other occupant, secured a life jacket to his grandfather and maneuvered the boat to a fishing vessel that was passing nearby. The fishing boat's crew helped to pull the man aboard.
The boy hopes to one day be a lobsterman like his grandfather.
