many years ago i decided i was tired of everyone asking me where i played basketball just because i was tall. if 6ft 6 in is tall anymore. so i started.......i played at DUKE. a look of shock would come over their eyes!they would listen to me tell about my days as a small forward and all the fun i had with the G man. mike and i were tight. i fed him the ball and the fast break was all mine. anyway......they believed me. why didnt i make it in the pro's? well remember when bobby knight threw that chair across the floor? did you see where it went? it hit me and took out my knee!
no one ever see's that NO! all they look at is bobby knight throwing the chair. when that chick that ice skated got hit in the knee.....everyone came to her rescue. me, i just lost out to an NBA career and watched mike go on and play for the sixer's. any way with a straight face no one knew if i was telling the truth or not. so since bobby was kind enough to allow me to put him in my life story.....i like him. say what you want about the man, many people wanted him to coach their kid. i'm sure he did more good than bad, and that aint bad!

Come on - you can't argue with the results. These guys are teachers behind the scenes and have a maniacal determination to witness pefection in their final product. their is a difference between a true teacher shaking his head, throwing a chair and demandning excellence once it has been taught and witnessed, and some wannabe overpaid slug exploding because his desired result has not been acheived because he could not teach.
Too many kids today demand respect when they have not earned it. Too many people want to teach when they don't know how to do. These guys are truly the last of the breed and I personally think it is for the worse. I personally hated the best football coach I ever had but I respected the hell out of him and hugged him when I saw him 5 years ago. I credit him for "growing me up" as much as anyone except my dad. The great ones drive you to succeed beyond what you thought you were capable of. Knight is one of them. *******.......yes! teachers .................absolutely.
trollman when I wore out mom and pops they sent me to the army.........geez ! Those men in green thought I was weird.......push-ups ...how many you want senior drillwhen is lunch? / break?
every kid should do 200 in 2 minutes.......makes for a great appetite around 5:00 pm
Bobby was expanding their minds beyond their fantasies, at such a rate, most played catch up their entire time in college.![]()
i had the same experience as you. after the first two weeks in Ft. Dix (i still luv that place!) i realized what a pile of shit i was in, but i grew up real fast, probably just like you! but i also learned to HATE negatively applied and selfish authority and to despise it for not being just a little more respectful of something other than itself.
i agree with the analysis by Squidnation. Bill, you captured the extremes of the psyche correctly and words like "maniacal" and "*******" are right on.
me personally, i would never ket my kid be coached by him. call me new school, but i think there is a better way and it starts with respect and leadership. i can be tuff on you but repsect you as a man and show you the way through my positive example. that press conference with the grandson and all his other antics are all BAD examples.
and if you treat people shitty or treat animals shitty or crap on those of lesser status, then i take issue with you and lose some respect for you. you don't have to stomp on others to boost yourself.
anthony, obviously the "hitler" reference was not a literal one.
Hey Trollman...What's up?
I see your points and they are valid...but keep in mind, a lot of these "kids" never had a dad to teach them respect you and I and most on this board grew up with (sure, the Steve Alfords had a nice home life). I am talking about some of the inner city kids that would be in gangs dealing drugs if it wasn't for coach Knight. You of all people I'm sure, understands that in the military, the trick is to "undress" the new minds, train it HARD and the end result is a great American. Coach Knight was a student of the mind & Military at Ohio State and honed and applied his craft while at West Point. That is when I first said "he is the guy I would play for" as I lived just south of West Point on the river at the time. When he went to Indiana, I was a misplaced hoosier fan.
You points are valid... but I gotta tell ya, I see ALOT of kids that need a summer at his BBall camp.
i really cannot argue with this logic. you are right i too have lived under similar thumbs. as you know, it is a ruff and tumble world and if you come from a certain background, i am sure that coach is an angel from heaven to you and ur parents. i just think he is outdated now. that stupid stunt with the grandson and the binky pushed me over the edge.
