I don't think I would characterise it as a double standard, but our policies with China surely include conflicting objectices. Nothing new with the present situation as it has challanged international diplomacy since ancient times. Situations as this are what make international policy very complex with hard decisions to be made. I guess, this situation is similar to many of our own decisions--- sometimes you have to pick your battles (or at least defer them to when other matters or less pressing).

    Do we care?

Do we really care what happens to the Tibetans? When a rape victim is stoned in the Middle East, do we really care? When an unfaihful housewife is beheaded in Riyayd ( or the US) , do we shed tears?

If Taiwan was invaded would we lift a finger?

Our backbone suffers fron osteoporosis. It has been weakened and many of the vertebrae are in danger of imminent collapse.

Eric Holder calls us cowards. Our economy is in tatters. The free market may soon be consigned to the wastebin of history. Congress passes massive spending bills no one has read, much less understands or has thought out the unintended consequences. Corruption is rampant. It is difficult to find 12 honest men/women to fill the cabinet.

The issue of the Tibetans would rank pretty low on a list of Americas concerns. All of us know men who have lost jobs. We are fearful of our own families welfare and our own.

This government of ours was formed without my help but it is our government ( Have mercy upon us). I would have preferred business tax incentives and personal tax deductions to let the "hidden hand" made famous by Adam Smith work the wonders it has done in the past. But that is not to be. Your neighbor will get his mortgage supplemented while you will get an extra $13 in your check (if you get a check).

Meanwhile Our Leaders will jet over us in grand style. Meet with foreign and domestic leaders and worry how they can be reelected. Look for groups of peoples to get largesse to insure they vote the "Right Way" in the next election.

The people of Tibet better look to themselves for their salvation. America has lost its footing. We are no longer the "Shining City on the Hill", the "beacon of hope". We are just another empire that has passed its apogee and is heading for the mediocrity of socialism. I wouldn't be surprised if Chavez makes a state visit
