In my posts this time of year we get a lot of sails and a lot of "whiffing". Sometimes its me . Could be my mate. Sometimes its the angler. A lot of things set up a whif. Trying to strike with a circle. Trying to set up with the fish pointed at us. Failing to drop back or putting too much pressure while doing so. Sometimes the hook just fails to find something to set in.
Heres the bottom line though. For the most part they share something in common. Whether or not I'm on the stick, ITS STILL MY FAULT!
I'm the captain on my boat. Its my job to teach the people how to do the right thing. If they fail to, it has to be me that shoulders that responsibility for not being a good enough coach.
A lot of my guests want to give bowing up a try on their own. I have no objections. I give the standard speaches about how to look for the fish, how to drop, how to reel tight and stay tight... Sometimes thats not enough. I should be more clear to wait for the tap before dropping into oblivion. I should be more clear about making sure that fish is pointed away before comming tight. Theres a lot of coaching stuff I need to brush up on.
So this is my New Years Resolution... I "Deep C" do solemny swear I will try harder to COMMUNICATE the proper techniques involved with actually getting a fish to stick to the line. I further attest that any whiff aboard a vessel that I am in command of shall be deemed as MY FAULT...
Thank you for your time...
