NEWARK, N.Y., Jan. 24 (UPI) -- The Newark Bay section of New York Harbor was closed Thursday afternoon after a tanker loaded with orange juice collided with a dredging vessel.[3] Two vessels - an orange juice tanker and a dredging ship - collided in the Newark Bay this afternoon, prompting authorities to shut down the harbor for several hours.[4]
The authorities had to shut down a tidal back bay of New York Harbor, Newark Bay, due to the collision of 3 vessels: two dredging ships - the New York and the Melvin Lemmerhirt - and The Orange Sun, a 669-foot tanker.[5]
The three-way collision was between two dredging vessels, the 117-foot Melvin Lemmerhirt and the New York, and the 669-Foot Liberian tanker Orange Sun. The Orange Sun is reported to be carrying orange juice as its cargo.[6] The collision occurred around 3 p.m. near Port Newark''and involved two dredging vessels and a 669-foot tanker, the "Orange Sun," carrying orange juice.[7]
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A 669-foot ship carrying orange juice collided Thursday with two dredging vessels in Port Newark, apparently causing no injuries but leaking an unknown substance in the frigid waters.[8]
No one was hurt, but a small amount of hydraulic fluid leaked into the frigid water. The freighter, called the Orange Sun, and a dredging vessel carrying seven people collided just before 2 p.m. A third vessel got out of the way just in time, said Coast Guard spokesman Seth Johnson.[9] The freighter, called the Orange Sun, and two dredging vessels collided just before 2 p.m. One of the dredging vessels was believed to be taking on water, said Annie Berlin, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard.[8]
The Orange Sun, a 669-foot Liberian flagged vessel and the dredging vessel New York were involved in a collision resulting in the New York taking on water and leaking a small amount of hydraulic fluid.[1]
Reports also say the New York is taking on water, that there is a fluid leaking from one of the ships (presumably, not orange juice), and there's hydraulic fluid leaving a sheen on the waters nearby. It's bound by the shores of Newark and Elizabeth on the west, Jersey City on the east and Staten Island on its south.[6] Petty Officer Seth Johnson, a spokesman for the Coast Guard, said no spills of oil or orange juice were apparent, although there was a light sheen on the water, possibly from hydraulic fluid.[3] Johnson said there was a light sheen of hydraulic oil in the bay, but no evidence of a major spill - oil or orange juice - from the collision. "There's no loose OJ," he said
