    CHUM.

I've contemplated buying a wood chipper to make my own chum but they're pretty pricey to buy new and it's tough to find a used one (at least where i've looked)... What do you think Home Depot or Lowes would think if you returned one of their rentals covered in blood and scales??

I know I could take the cheaper route and buy a hand grinder but when trying to make a large volume of chum for a tournament it may take awhile to fill a number of buckets.. What else have you used to make your own chum? has anyone used the electric gunnel mount grinders?

I've posted this topic on a similar thread and have been advised to buy pre-made chum so i won't have to deal with the fuss, but i want to try something new and i think the fuss may be worth it in the end... I can't imagine the chum you buy which has more then likely been frozen, thawed at one point or another, frozen again, transported, etc etc etc can be comparable to stuff you make yourself, know what's going into it, and know is fresh...

Are you talking about a gas or diesel powered chipper used for tree removal?
Cabelas and Bass Pro both sell electric grinders I have used for beef and pork and you cant stuff them fast enough, they gring everything...I think the last one I used was 3/4 horsepower from Cabelas.

I am talking about a backyard type gas chipper.. a smaller one, not a commercial chipper you'd see on the side of the street. I just took a look on Cabela's Site, which model do you have... is it the 3/4 HP commercial grinder? If so that goes for $329.. in that case do you think i would be better off buying a gunnel mount type unit with cutting board and all for what i believe are around the same price.... I'm not sure of the comparison...don't know the HP and capacity of the gunnel mount type.

Take it from someone who has used the Small Backyard Chipper for grinding chum for the Monster Shark Tournament. It sucks. Chum will be everywhere. On you, the yard you do it in, everywhere but the five gallon bucket you wanted it to go into. We made a royal mess out of my friends yard. There is no way to control the spray out the oulet. We chipped Bluefish, pogies, mackeral, and Tuna parts into a masons trough and then shoveled it into 5 gallon buckets. I'm pretty sure my friends neighbors still hate him for this. His yard stunk like the $h!T house door off a tuna boat for a month. Oh and the wood chipper was never the same either. I borowwed that from a friends father. It took 2 bottles of bleach, a trip to the do it yourself carwash, and about 15 baby pine trees to get it smelling fresh again.

I have used the 3/4 horse from Cableas, I have thrown chunks of frozen pork, beef, deer and other critters throught it and it does not stop. I always used a hand grinder to make chum, but I would of killed to have one of these electric grinders when I was doing it. Ive never used a gunnel mounted one.

I don't know seems like a pain in the neck to have to lug that thing down to the vineyard. Most people are limited for space as it is (for the trip down). I have also tried to grind my own chum but now I brink all my fish parts to a buddy who owns a tackle shop. I supply the fish and buckets and he grinds it and freezes it for nothing.
