CHRISTMAS NIGHT BUGS CHANNEL ISLANDS, CA

Kinda new here and I really like this site. My daughter Jenny and boyfriend Alan drove up from San Diego, CA for the holidays and decided they wanted to try hooping. The wind had been howling all day but we decided to give it a go. My wife Sandy also came along for the fun. We had 3 legals before dark and 2 limits by 8:00 pm. Including a 5 pounder and a few of the nicer grade. It was an early crawl and I had 3 different baits. (Mackerel, anchovy and rock cod carcasses) It didn’t matter. It was nice to get it done quickly for a change!

Very cool pics and post! If you get a minute, would you mind describing what "hooping" is to an east coast kid?
Thanks again for sharing, I bet they were delicious!

Hooping is done with round nets like the one in the picture. You load them up with dead fish and fish them in 5 - 50 feet of water around structure such as breakwaters. We pull em every 20-30 minutes or so. Then you just need the bugs to be crawling.
