All right having some back issues, and I have been to consult with two Chiropractors. One is old school does flexion decompression and the like. The other is new school and uses a decompression table. I seem to have over done my excersising a little. Now I have a little pinch and a little numbness and tingling, its intermittent but when it happens its not fun. So anyway what experience do you all have with the above types and what are the pros and cons. A little help would be appreciated this is affecting my running a quite a bit and that just cant happen.
Honestly don't know what your terms mean, but I have a lot of experience being treated. I've had them both "snap" or "pop" the vertebrae back into place, by twisting me into different positions, and then using a little popping type device while I'm laying on my stomach. Both work well, the second if you're in a lot of pain, and the first if you're just going in for a maintenance type "adjustment." There's been times when I could barely walk in with my wifes help, and after walk out with no pain at all...amazing...The game with chiropractors is they try to get you on a monthly maintenance type scenarios, but if you have the time, money/insurance...it doesn't do you any harm to keep things lined up properly...sit-ups is by far the best exercise, once your out of pain, to strenghthen your stomach muscles, and thus avoid more back problems....
Billy flexion decomprssion is where they stretch the discs back out by twisting and flexing your body manually. The table is where they strap your hips and chest down to a table and literally pull you apart, it supposedly allows your muscles to relax more during the treatment. I am paying this out of pocket right now so I need to do a little research before hand. The new school guy is a little more expensive but it seems like it may be better. I just want to get some real world thoughts other then just their sales pitch.
I'm in Mass, and during times when I don't have any insurance, they charged me $30 for a visit. Since you are just starting in with back problems, I'd suggest the little popping device, I'll try to find out what they call it. I believe the other stuff you're describing is for folks with some degeneration going on. The popper is a quick, easy, painless fix for most minor strains....the key is to get straightened out, and stay that way, so you don't put stresses where they don't belong...50 sit ups a day, and it won't happen again....
Do some Yoga. It will stretch out all the kinks. When I was going to the gym, there was a yoga class there twice a week and I was the most limber I had ever been. I have not done yoga in a while and I feel tight all over, even pulled a back muscle last month lifting heavy things. I know if I was still doing yoga, I would not have hurt myself.
activator - A method, and also the name of a tool, used by chiropractors for non-force adjustments. The tool is used to impart a tiny and rapid physical impulse to a specific area of the body. See activator technique for more information.
Ive been exercising, I stopped for about a month and started again I think thats what did it. Ive been doing weights, P90x which has a lot of Ab work and actually has stretching and yoga which isnt in the program Im doing, but Ive been doing them as well. Plus Ive been running 4 times a week. Trying to work up to 6 miles a day and I think Ive been pushing way too much, Im a big guy 6'2 250lbs, and Im sure it cant be doing my back any good. Since it was cold this morning which kills my lungs, I jumped on the treadmill and about a mile in my leg went numb, I wish someone would have taped that, Id have an extra 10k for that fall.
Noodle.....
if you had read the maximum poundage on those leaf springs of yours you wouldnt have that problem. You just cant carry 250lbs in a 100lb sack.

Duck Miester,
Been through all of it. Moist heat is good to limber it up, then ice to knock back the swelling. Nothing will help your back pain like giving it a rest when it need's it, that's what the pain's about. Daily morning stretch exersizing has kept me going for close to 30 year's now. Build up the front of the truck slowly. Once you have your mucle tone where it need's to be, really watch your weight. Belly fat is an absolute killer for the back. A good physical theropist can give you a regiment (a realistic one) to give you a long term improvement. Your back is hurting for a reason, don't push it. Believe me it will win. Frank
