I have to agree if you want real HARDWOOD FLOORING you are going to pay. Thats like saying GOOD reels from China.
Im tring to get my house in ship shape to get it on this Market for sale. I did my wifes office with hard wood flooring that a friend gave to use it was only 175 SQ but I know it cost him a mint to purchase. He was selling his house and had them in storage.
Good luck

don't forget tar paper under it. check the moisture content before installing, or let it sit in the area to be installed for a week. It will grow or shrink according to the humidity in the install area.......your free tip of the week

You have your ideology and I have mine!
Yes there is cheap hardwood available..
...you just have to look for it.
I picked up finished 3/4" solid wood 4" Brazilian cherry for 3.19 SF before tax an a 10% buyers premium (on consignment). This was "select" no defects 2'-7' lengths. It looks beautiful! Same stuff is 6-8 a SF in the home improvemnet stores. (IMO stay away from lumber liquidators-they do alot of bait and switch type selling. most of the stuff they sell highly discounted are shorts or "not select" For the Select you will pay alt more!). The same place has also auctioned pallets of similar flooring for under $1000.00. The pallet had at least 1,200 sf on it.

Their consignment stock changes all the time but I have seen domestic hardwood for as low as 1.29 SF
I installed about 350sf myself in about 12 hours (including tear up of the existing 2" Bruce oak. Like Flatbottom said don't forget the tar paper. Renting the nailer from HD should only be about 40 bucks a day.
The exotic hardwoods can be had for a bargain right now. with the slowdown in homebuilding, alot of distributors are stuck with alot of imported stock that cost them money to store. Look into local building material auction houses and consignment set ups. There are also traveling auctions of building materials from companys such as Peak Auctions (although they aren't not as cheap as local auctions setups)
Right now is the best time to purchase building materials. the prices for sheathing, lumber, molding, drywall, etc. are 30-60% cheaper than they were 3 years ago, even at the home improvement stores. Not to mention if your not a do it yourselfer than "local" contractors are alot hungrier for work and are less likely to turn down small jobs than they were during the housing boom.

The gent that refinishes our rental hardwood floors told me he can install I believe he said oak for $ 6.50 a sf. He did say it is quite thick perfect for rentals because they can be sanded down and refinished numerous times. Ill look for his contact info and post later on.

Anthony's Ark is a blowboater
Take a look at Bamboo flooring. I put it into a little house I just built and am very happy with it.
It's eco-friendly, less than half the cost of oak, extremely durable and very good looking.

This may not be the thing on slab, but I have done quite a bit with unfinished I buy directly from the mills in Vermont. Last project I bought #3 red birch for .99 square foot from Lathrops in Bristol. I think it looks great, way more character than Home Depot crap. Only downside is that the ends are rough and you have to cut each one for the butt joint (and if you are really picky router tongue and groove into the ends). I believe Lathrops has also ventured into pre-finished but not sure what the prices are.
I have also bought pre-finished from Lumber Liquidators. They usually have some really good deals. I think the last one we did was 3" maple for 2.69/ft.
