Catching Blue Marlin in Gulf of Mexico-
Just taking a poll. Guys that fish in the Gulf of Mexico- Florida- Texas, Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama.
What percentage of Marlin are caught in what way? a)Marlin is seen first then maneuvered boat towards and swung spread near- or seen then pitched a live bait? b) Versus just having an incidental/accidental hookup while trolling artificial/dead bait.????? (marlin not really seen) C) Marlin just appears in spread and a live bait is pitched to him then? Last edited by sspharmdoc; 06-28-2008 at 10:57 PM. |

B & C for me.
Others will be able to add more, but I had three appear out of nowhere and piled on while pulling skirted baits for 'hoos. Too bad the 30W's & leaders were not up for the task. They were nice to see for about 10 seconds ![]()

Blue Marlin... I would say off my area of FL most just pile on a trolled lure or rigged bait for me, probably 70%. That is only because I tend pull a lot of lures in my area of the gulf. The other 30% are bait and switch from the teaser. Most of the time the fish have a really short attention span on the teaser. Off LA I would say more like 60/40 lure/bait and switch.
Now whites are a different story, more on small/medium ballys and mullet, naked or skirted. Also they are suckers for live slow trolled blue runners or spanish sardines.
