For non USCG ticket carrying guys, the lenght of the tow would/should have been evident by lights or day shapes if they were posted. Also whistle signals
are SUPPOED to be exchanged singnifying actions of vessels. A call on channel 13 to the tug would have let the tug know he was there even though he probably was not visable on radar. When all else fails you should stay well clear, THAT CAN MEAN MILES! Sorry for the rant guys but the whole things looks like it could have been avoided had both rigs followed the rules. That is why the Coasties make us learn them. Glad no one was hurt!
