Family owned and operated, Cape Horn Boat Company has been manufacturing hardcore open-fishermen along Florida’s northwest coast for more than two decades. They started the business to fill their own need for a “no-nonsense,” high-quality platform capable of safely conquering whatever the Gulf of Mexico could dish out.
They soon established a following with a select group of seriouis anglers who convinced the group to go into production. Hence, Cape Horn Boats was born.
From their 17 ft. bay boat to the 23 ft. Tournament Edition to the 36 ft. Offshore flagship of the fleet, all Cape Horns’ are designed and developed in-house right from the drawing board to the initial prototype. Tour the factory and you’ll quickly learn that most of the company’s dedicated employees are avid fishermen, avid fishermen who know exactly what it takes to build a first-class boat. The way they look at it, you don’t trust just anyone to tie your leaders and they don’t let just anyone build their boats. Each member of the manufacturing team clearly realizes that failure of any component is simply not an option when you’re ninety miles offshore battling heavy seas and heavy fish.

At Cape Horn, commitment to quality starts by limiting production to no more than 250 boats a year. Attention to detail has always been a Cape Horn prerequisite and they refuse to comprimise by mass-producing any model. Cape Horn strives on delivering every make-sence ammenity that serious fishermen could expect in a boat, and after only one look, you’ll quickly realize that the 31 Offshore is no different. It is manufactured from the very best materials available, with strength never comprimised and ease of ownership always the goal. This philosophy is quickly realized through low maintenance by design, leaving substantially more time to fish.
Taking a closer look at quality construction, the Cape Horn 31 rides on a bullet-proof hull that is constructed of over an inch thick of solid laminateready and able to handle to roughest of conditions. The multiple plys of solid composite material are individually placed one at a time with each subsequent layer allowed to properly cure before the next layer is applied. This lengthy process is time consuming and contributes to limited production, but guarantees extreme longevity in the harshest and wettest environments.

Pressure filling the entire inner-bottom with closed-cell urethane foam adds to the boat’s stiffness and quiets the ride. It is also one more way Cape Horn separates itself from the pack. Proper cure of the foam is crucial at this stage before the hull and deck can be glassed together to form a one piece structure composed of the strongest, most rigid type of composite construction. Afterwards, every square inch of the interior is hand sanded in preparation for the topcoat of exterior grade gelcoat.
This process differs greatly from mainstream, molded construction practices. One look inside a Cape Horn 31, and educated buyers will quickly realize that these boats are, in fact, special. This interior gelcoat method, too, is quite labor intensive, but yields major benefits. The payback is huge for the end consumer who can look forward to a lifetime of durability with ease of maintenance. The way the Cape Horn team looks at it, “Fishing is our instinct- building unique offshore boats is our tradition. After all, who has time to wax the deck when you can just rinse it off.”
There is no question that you, too, will appreciate the high-quality interior gelcoat which not only resist the elements, but provide quick clean-up at the end of the day. Plus, gelcoating the interior of the boat makes fixing a scratch, a do-it-yourself project rather than an expensive repair job. All of the unique steps in their construction process ultimataly leave every Cape Horn model unique in its class. Plus, manufacturing each vital element of the boat in-house delivers an extraordinary level of quality control and outstanding end performance.

Finally, after each 31 is completely manufactured, the boat is inspected and all systems checked and rechecked. The dream machine is now ready for final detail. After a careful cleaning and another inspection, Chris Fabbro, the president of Cape Horn, provides his seal of approval. No Cape Horn leaves the yard until Chris feels it has met or exceeded every one of Cape Horn’s stringent standards. Once cleared, the completed project is loaded on a factory supplied trailer, and shipped to one of the company’s many dealers for delivery to an eagerly awaiting customer.
From the moment I stepped foot on the tournament tested Cape Horn 31 Offshore, I realized this boat was specifically designed with the professional in mind who isn’t willing to sacrifice speed or comfort for increased fishability. Twin 250 hp outboards enable crews to reach distant offshore destinations- comfortably, dependably, and quickly. With a cruising speed of 45 mph and a range of over 450 miles, there is almost nowhere big fish can hide.
Veteran anglers know that trophy fish requiere quality baits and a full arsenal of tackle, and will especially appreciate the seriousness of this boat’s fishable design. The largest live baits will feel pampered in one of two expansive livewell systems. With 22 rod holders as standard equipment, and a full functinal console with ample dash space and overhead electronics box, other boats in this class appear unqualified next to the Cape Horn 31. Climb into the console and you quickly realize how much storage space the 31 actually delivers. With room for a porta-potti and over 6’5” of headroom, you may want to consider purchasing some additional gear to take advantage of the extra storage.
