    Broken Nails & Busted Puters

If we can talk about bad days with broken finger nails around this place, I can darn sure ask about puter problems on this site:

    (1) I am old school when it comes to computer resources--- limited memory and such. I am almost obessed about keeping those little icon things in the bottom right of the screen from showing up--- you know, way down on the bottom right. When I boot up I close all but the sound and anti virus thing.--- Is this helpful, or is this other crap actually runnning?

    (2) when I go into task manager and see what all tasks are running (or whateverits called), how in the heck do you figure out what is necessary and what is garbage?

I lent my lap top to my Administrative Assistant (how ya like that for being politically correct?) to take home for a couple of weeks while her's was on the fritz, and the little *****'s kid screwed the thing up so bad I can't even get it to work.

yes , Glenn you sure can. I wish I could help you with your puter problems, but when it comes to computers Im not that knowledgable. However, I do have a friend that is and when she gets back in town tomorrow I will tell her about the problems you are having. Maybe she will have an answer. If so I'll post it for you.

hard fix......do a restore back to the date your were running fine...You want the icons in the right bottom corner working for you some what

soft fix......uninstall the apps added. I will find a software app to clean the junk and give you some control to run apps at start or shut them down....let me look around

ok try this....default settings are enough to clean the mess. It can be customizable

That would be great. I turned the thing on today after getting it back and saw a bunch of icons. Two of which were 2 little icons "AIM" and "Wahoo messages"

Hell ya, I thought. A new hunting site and a new Wahoo article or something.
I clicked on the AIM thing and the frigging screen looked like popcorn---. I ain't ever hit so many X's in my life.

The Wahoo messages were the same thing---- never could get rid of that smart ass smily face though

The little things in the bottom right are all the result of various applications/programs which likely YOU or someone you loaned to installed. Very few come with the computer out of the box.

Regarding task mgr. Don't just go killing things.

Regarding too much crap running on the sytem, you may also try removing some unwanted things rather than just killing them.

Go to start -> control pannel -> add/remove programs. When the list comes up you'll see the familiar list of stuff you normally would be familiar with. Perhaps your friend installed aol instant messanger or some crap like that. You can permanantly remove using this process.

Lastly, there are other things you can do to periodically keep performance on your 'puter operating well. You can download some antispyware applications free on the internet. For example "adawarese personal". You run this everyonce in a while to get rid of sheet that comes from various websites. These are things called cookies. They are miniature programs running in the background. They do things like count how many times you've been to the site, or what your clicking habbits are. Getting rid of them is a good thing.
You can also clear you cache but you risk losing things like debit card numbers and things like that which are conveniently kept for you like if you use online banking. If you want to do that go to tools->internetOptions (from a web browser window) and then press delete cookies.

If you put your mouse over the top of those little icons in the lower right that will tell you what they are, from that it may help you know whether you want them or not. Feel free to PM me if your unclear.

Good luck and try not to break a nail.

Glenn we had a near collision, I was right, yes do the add/remove programs thing. Then remove the aol instant messanger crap. That will speed up boot time and runtime.

Well Glenn, I've figured out over the years that the 'puter is like the clap. You can't see it, you're not really sure where it came from, but it really makes life miserable.

When you get the clap, you go to the doc and get the shots. After that, your equipment is OK. When you get the 'puter clap, you go to Best buy and get the replacement. Life is good.

Glad you gave all the boys & girsl the clap.
