    brand new all around

hi all, i have never been to into fishing before but my wife wanted to relive memories of mackerel fishing with her grandfather so i looked into charters. A guy at my work suggested I'd be better to put the money into my own boat. Long story short my wife said ok and i got i new(to me)21 foot thompson. old but in good shape, but now i've gotta learn how to fish.taking our first trip out this saturday with just cheapy equipment from walmart but have plans to sell stuff out of my reef tanks to upgrade. just a bit of a long winded introduction sorry. I'll be launching from Bug light in south portland (casco bay)if anybody has any tips on where a newbie should learn to fish, thanks, Ty

Welcome aboard. I haven't fished up that way in 20 years but the last time I did, there were some good bottom fishing grounds not too far off the beach - Cod, Pollock

I have no idea what the fishing is like now.

One possibility is to find a guide service to go with you on your boat and teach you how to fish it...

Welcome to SFC! I'm a little south of there, but post your question in the NE Forum and you should get some answers- we have some guys that know the spots up there. Congrats on the new boat, and welcome again!

Ty, welcome aboard. Lots of good help here. I'm in NC and won't be of much help for your local fishing. I think you've got a "keeper" for a wife, she talked you into buying a boat!!! Awesome, go get that girl some fish, good luck
