I use hi-speed planer with release clip. Fish with Braid backing and mono top-shot to flouro leader. Fish light tackle, level wind for clients, that braid will cut you. Only spooled with monster mystery-(swordfish??)- fish.

I use hollowcore backing with a mono topshot. We troll all 80lb line, but for a planer rod I would bump that up a bit. As for sharking, if you fish heavier line when using the planers, you can swap your topshot if you choose to go with a size leader you prefer. The hollowcore gives you a knotless connection, as well as more capacity. It also requires less respolling since most of the time you will only replace the topshot, you only need to cut off nicked hollowcore sections and resplice the two cut ends, which saves money. Most guys I fish with who use planers use 130lb hollowcore unless fishing for giants, some use 200lb, and they use a comparable size leader or whatever they feel is fit for that fishery. This gives you a setup that should suit your needs well and can multitask very easily.
