BOY, DID I DODGE A BULLET TODAY

Went in for my first colonscopy today and boy I was not expecting to hear what I heard!

I'm only 46 y/o, eat a pretty health diet, weight train, always on the go and have excellent genetics but.............my gastroenterologist, one of the top gastro researchers in the United States, found one polyp the size of a chickpea and the other over 1" long!! He showed me the pictures during the post procedure consultation. My jaw hit the floor! LAST thing I was expecting to hear!! And see!! He's reasonably certain the large one is benign but I will not know til Friday whether it is benign or malignant.

If I had waited just one more year to have this done, he said the news could have been much worse. Cancer. Since my mother has a history of breast cancer on her side of the family, there might be some connection according to the literature he gave me to read.

To all you guys and gals who might be procrastinating about having this procedure, DON'T DELAY!! Call and schedule an appointment TODAY!!

It runs in my family too... I go regularly and have dodged a few bullets myself.

My father was diagnosed 10 years ago and had to have surgery. The procedure cured the cancer, but it killed my father (bloodclot).

If he had been checked regularly, he'd probably still be here today.

I work with a lot of colorectal surgeons, and have been in on countless surgical cases that result in permanant colostomies... or worse (believe me there is something that is worse than just having a colostomy)...one of the reasons why things go from a rather routine bowel resection in which full function is continued, to a bad case in which you're carrying a bag for the rest of your life is that some people put it off too long. Plain and simple. Have it done. Colorectal cancer is quite curable if you catch it in time.

Phillyfishermen, I'm glad that you had it done and that you're getting it taken care of. If you need to know who the good surgeons are down there I can find out for you, just send me a PM.

    Good words and advice guyz

Man I am glad to hear the early catch and release will keep you on the fishing grounds a lot longer.

Some time ago in my early 40's I came down with Giardia (spelling) and everyone said oh it must be colon cancer then the scope job said nope not that....

I tell follks now that having the proceedure done is no bg deal given the down side of not being treated

    Glad your OK!

BTW...sent my son an email with your photo of the sumo jumper and he laughed his arse off when he arrived safely n OZ..thanks again for putting smiles on our faces

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the biopsy comes back benign.

I've got my fingers crossed for you as well Jim. I'm sure that it will turn out benign and that there isn't anything to worry about. Even if the worst was to happen and it wasn't benign, you should know that I've heard many folks say that if you were to get cancer, colorectal cancer is the one to get as the prognosis is so good. Good luck man, I'll be keeping 'em crossed for you.
