    Bottom paints 101!

alright, the name of the game is bottom paint! The new rig has never been painted. What do I want to do with it? What are the best products to use? It'll b in the water from early to mid may through fall stripers and probably up til seaducks in late nov-early dec. I never quite knew what the bottom paint was on my old boat, but I never quite liked it much. Other people's boats at times looked slicker and nicer. Is that simply due to who did the job or was it the products used? tight lines amigos

here's the absolute best approach to doing it once and doing it the right way...

first, chemically dewax the bottom-do not skip this step !! the boat has wax on it from being in the mold,it's gotta be removed...after chemically dewaxing, scuff sand the bottom, use 80g paper, just scuff it...then get 2 gallons of interprotect 2000e,one white and one grey...have at it !! alternate colors, this way you know it's covered...you wnat this coating as thick as a match book cover-do not listen to anyone telling you,"use 3 coats",it's not about "coats",it's about thickness...using the interprotec 2000e,you have 2 weeks before it needs to be sanded, before coating again...
use a "tell coat",a different color than the finish color-example,you want a black bottom, use a blue tell coat...use the absolute cheapest "hard" paint you can get...1 coat is all you need...after that, paint the bottom in micron csc...do at least 4 coats...you should get a season per coat...when the blue shows through,it's time to repaint the micron.doing it this way,you will never get a build up...

if that parker has an aluminum bracket for the motor,do not use micron,or any other copper based antifouling paint on the bracket-use trilux...leave a gap of at least 1" around the perimiter of the bracket before painting it in trilux-search my posts, you will find pics... if the boat isn't equipped with a bracket,do the same with the engine-leave a gap of at least 1" around the engine...failure to do this can and will lead to a galvanic problem...

Jawz is 110% correct, listen to him about the barrier coat, good time to do it.

With that being said, my current boat came with (water based) pettit hydrocoat on it for an ablative paint, I was skeptical at first but absolutely love it. Don't put it on the aluminum bracket though.

the bertram has pettit hydracoat on it,this was done about 5yrs ago...it's finally due for repainting...

lot of big mfg's use the hydracoat, sea ray is one of them...it's a good paint...i just prefer the micron csc...

Two of my boats before this one I put the CSC with barrier on. This one came with Hydro already applied so I stuck with it. Both work very well.

like i said, good stuff the hydracoat...i had 6g,that's the reason the bertram was painted with it

    dumb question...
did you ever check and see if your spreader lites and hand rails on the cabin top are sealed really well ?? seen a few parkers with dry rotted hardtops from these parts, not being sealed very well...

    Hey Jawz,
I heard if you dump 12 oz per gal of cayanne pepper into the bottom paint it helps..ever hear this?

Thanks everyone. are there any time constraints between any part of the painting process and putting the boat in water? I thought i remembered some kind of 24 hour rule? am i crazy or is there something to it...
