    Bottom paint??

I have a '97 pursuit that has a few layers of bottom paint. I am not the original owner. I know that the boat was used for a few years and then it sat for a few years. I'm wondering if there is anything i should do to it for this summer besides just bottom painting. I feel like I'd like to get the old layers off and put a fresh coat on the hull? Is that worth while or no? Is there a certain type of bottom paint that I should use? I wanna keep the bottom fast and healthy! Thanks for any suggestions.

    BOTTOM PAINT

Depending on how many layers and if the old paint has good adhesion you can sand, cleanup and repaint. If it has many layers or you want to start fresh you can have it soda blasted back to raw gelcoat. Then barrier coat and bottom paint. This process cost about $110.to $140.per foot.It is well worth the cost if you have many coats. You will pick up speed and fuel econmy. As to what bottom paint that depends on were you boat.(hot climate e.t.c ) and how much you use your boat.Ablative paints (self polishing) are good as long as you use your boat.If your in a hot climate you want paint that has more biocide to resist marine growth. At jersey cape we use seahawk paints on all new boats and recommend it to our yard customers.interlux is the second choice. The most important thing with any bottom paint system is proper application, surface prep.time between coats etc.Read the instructions. If i can help or anwser any questions call me.

    I'll back that up!

Wayne is right. Sometimes the best thing to do is get the existing paint off the bottom and start over right. This may not be the case for you, but get someone who know's what their doing to take a look at her. I always advise people to do it right with quality materials rather than wait another year, another coat, etc..

Yeah , we have the same problem with our 35 viking. The owner before us never really sanded it or did anything he just put layer on top of layer of paint. Every since we had the boat we have been sanding it down real good but we cant get it good enough. This year we are thinkign about getting it soda blasted cause we are putting under water lights on and we are going to be donig a lot more canyon fishing so were gonig to need more speed and better fuel .How much speed do you guys think it will be picking up if we do it?

Many owners dont want to spend the extra money or time to do it right? Sometimes, by the time the boat is in your hands, you're right, you have layers upon layers of chipping bottom paint. Soda blasting really does the job, make sure you get professionals that dont make a mess on your shipyard.

blast it and forget it...wayne stated it best...this is the process i use for customer's boats...
blast it down...finish sand it,then solvent wash it...i use interprotect 2000e,i alternate colors, grey and white...i get the epoxy as thick as a matchbook cover...then 1 coat hard bottom paint,a different color then the finish coat..then i do 3 or 4 coats of micron csc...this is an ablative self polishing paint...when the other color shows through,it's time to repaint with the micron....it's a smooth move....
i see quite a few guys try and short cut this, and trust me,i've seen quite a few problems...it's an expensive process, however,it's worth it...you WILL SAVE MONEY IN FUEL....

Interlux has a really good website with videos explaining all their products and how to use them. Here's a link about bottom paints. Go to "video library" and scroll down a bit.
