Good Samaritan rescues man from burning boat off Masonboro Inlet

A man escaped a fire on a commercial fishing boat Sunday and was rescued from his life raft by a Good Samaritan who heard his distress call.
The Beau, a 60-foot fishing vessel, was 20 miles off Masonboro Inlet when a fire began in the engine room, said Operations Specialist Andrew Molla of the Coast Guard’s Sector North Carolina.
The man reported the fire at 1:28 p.m. and said it was growing out of control. He used extinguishers and then tried to seal off the area where the fire was burning in hopes of smothering it, Molla said. But as he left the boat, the man told the Coast Guard he heard an explosion on board.
The Coast Guard dispatched a plane as well as rescue boats from Wrightsville Beach and Oak Island.
When rescue boats arrived 25 minutes later, the man had been picked up by a boater who heard the boat’s electric radio beacon, Molla said.
Once on scene, the Coast Guard took the man from the rescuer’s boat. He received treatment for burns on his hands.
The man did not need to be hospitalized. After the rescue, The Beau, heavily damaged, continued smoldering in the ocean. The Coast Guard contacted the boats owner about towing it into shore, Molla said.
