You’re Right! The hell with the Fishing Charter Business, I’m going to start a On- Call “Mobile “Diesel Service Business for the whole state of New Jersey! Now that should be a sure Winner! Now most Service Businesses would specialize in one or two brand of Diesel motors ,and carry parts for both and have a service area of about 30 to 45 miles from there marina or shop or Warehouse! Also calculate the miles per gallons, tolls, hours to the job & back – to make it Cost affective, etc .etc! But “NOT “me I’m going to cover the Whole f--------ing state of NJ! If I get a call to run to Cape May on a Saturday morning ( no parts ) and then my second call is in Sandy Hook , Hell I’m in business and I’m going , because I’m everybody’s” Little Buddy” –I’ll even tell the customers how to fish & work there cockpit the Right way ! The Big Question is should I keep the Wheel Barrels or return them to Home Depot ????????????????????? Cardinal Joe

If you offer the right item at the right price anything sells.

I stopped in your place last week Cardinal Joe and talked to Vinney (nice guy).
I was interested in the 20' Pro-Line express. I had just come back from Florida and they love their Pro-Lines.In the Keys the boats get used 12 months a year and Our guide had a 15 year old Pro-Line and it looked great ......best bang for the buck.

Vinney priced out the boat and gave me the factory promo price (offered no discount) and told me the boat will have to be ordered. Vinney also told me if my Pro-Line is the only one on the next order/shipment I could pay up to $2500.00 shipping....YIKES!

I went down the street to the Grady-White dealership where they had a 20' walk-around on the showroom floor.

They discounted the Grady-White over 15,000.00 bringing it to almost the same price as the Pro-Line and no additional shipping charge.

    I am now the proud owner of a 2008 Grady-White 208 Adventure.

    Which would you have purchased?

I left your show room (BTW nice show room) feeling like nobody was excited about selling me a boat. The GW dealership needed to sell boats and they gave me a deal that reflected it.

Cardinal Joe, I am also a business man and I posted this thinking you would appreciate the input of someone who was a potential customer.

    Cheers

Do I sense frustration somewhere in the air? For years people have asked me what I do for a living. When I explain that I'm in tackle sales, tackle manufacture, dabble in boat sales, freelance captain work, full time tourney capt., own a couple charter boats, operate another couple, write for small fishing publications, and basically all things wet,,, I get looked at like I'm full of sheisse...
Thats ok... What they fail to see is that no one facet of my life makes a living ... its the sum of all the parts. What they also fail to see is I have the ability to moth ball a couple if not several avenues of times get lean at that particular end of the industry. Almost all the facets of my livlihood have been in place for a long time. Shutting down without closing down is an art.

My lure sales and manufacture right now is on the back burner. Costs nothing to store it all in my garage and let all these newcommer comapnies give it their all. I'll be there to fire back up when enough burn out. Even Deep C sits in the mothball section. Selling her would make no sense as the market at least to me says I couldn't realisticly get what I need. So up on blocks she goes. Batts get disconected. Drain plug is pulled. Curtains closed and stabilizer in the fuel. Costs a little to keep her but when this recession/ depression is done she'll be there ready to go.

I study trends, changes in industry, etc. religeously... IF a new business is in mind. Great. But allow yourself a fall back plan til it either works or doesn't. The dumbest monkey wont let go of one branch til the next is firmly in grasp.

Some people can make a million dollars with a hot dog cart, ohters couldnt make a million if they started with two. Everyone has there own reason for starting a business. Morehead city is an excellent choice to start. For one, it host a year round Fishery, both inshore and offshore fishing gives your clients a wide variety of fish to choose from. Hey as long as you have good networking and a few friends that want to help out and charter. Im sure you can make a go of it. Good luck I hope it works.
